4 Ways To Take Full Advantage of Fall 2013

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stonehill chapter.

“I am so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

That’s a quote from Anne of Green Gables that I think perfectly captures my feelings towards the beautiful season of autumn. October is the prime month for fun fall festivities. It’s not too hot and it’s not too cold, which means sweaters and riding boots are out in full force. Fall fashion aside, this fabulous season has so much to offer. Here are four ways you can take advantage of fall 2013!

1. Pick apples or pumpkins

Apple orchards and pumpkin patches are the quintessential locations for fall fun. Not only do they taste better than what you can find at the grocery store, they also are more fun to…well, pick! There’s something very nostalgic about going to the orchard or farm as a 20-something. Release your inner kid and visit a nearby farm or orchard – and make a day out of it! Typically, there is more to do than just pick apples or pumpkins. Many farms offer hayrides, corn mazes and refreshments! So put on your flannels and vests, grab your friends, a slice of pie and get out there!

2. Go on a foliage hike or walk

Fall in New England is one of the most beautiful times of the year. Our fall seems to go by in a flash, so my best advice is to soak up all the pretty sights while you can. Hiking is a fantastic way to see foliage. New England is home to a wide variety of mountains that cater to all levels of hiking. If climbing up a mountain doesn’t seem appealing to you, try a Land Reserve trail or State Park. There are many opportunities to be involved in nature – go out and try something new and challenging because the view of the gorgeous red and orange leaves is well worth it!

3. Order the “fall flavors” before they’re gone

Pumpkin lattes. Apple cider donuts. Maple ice cream (yes, that’s a thing). These are just a few of the delicious offerings that I like to categorize as “fall flavors.” They’re all super yummy and sadly, temporary. Between now and Thanksgiving, I urge you to try everything “fall flavored” before they are replaced by the equally delicious holiday flavors. Orange Leaf, the popular frozen yogurt place, has a seasonal Pumpkin flavor. It tastes just like a slice of pumpkin pie. I’d suggest pairing it with their coffee flavor and then topping with chocolate sprinkles and almond slices…so good. Other stores have amazing fall treats, too! Don’t miss out…you won’t be able to fix your pumpkin and cider craving when December rolls around!

4. Go on a tour

Fall in New England comes with strange weather. Unexpected rain or cold fronts could put a damper on your plans. Instead of relying on your typical boredom busters – like the movies, shopping, etc. – try a fun and cheap way to have fun, like going on a tour. There are a wide variety of selections for New Englanders, including Ben & Jerry’s, Cape Cod Chips, Cabot Cheese, Sam Adams Brewery (if you’re 21 of course!) and many, many more. Most of the time, factory tours cost less than $10 a person. They’re educational and often you will get a free sample at the end. So, the next time you find yourself with nothing to do, look up a tour online and be on your way!

Fall will be over before you know it and Christmas music will be playing over the speakers at every store. So while you still can, make Fall 2013 your best yet!
