How to Dress for an Interview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Stetson chapter.

When dressing for an interview one must always look professional and well put together. However, adding a bit of a stylish touch can go a very long way from booking the job to just being kept on file! I’m going to share the trade secrets of how to dress perfectly to win the job you want!

First major wardrobe pieces to have are pencil shirts, a couple dress shirts (cotton or silk), a classic black blazer, and a chic pair of black almond toe patent leather pumps. For achieving the perfect business style, colors you want to look out for are navy, black, charcoal, dove gray, white and kaki.

The perfect pencil skit length is between one inch below the knee and two inches above the knee; any shorter is considered a bit unprofessional and any longer is too much “grandma” style.

For dress shirts, it is okay to venture out of the safe color zone for business attire, you just cannot go for anything too wild; pastel colors are perfectly acceptable, so are bold, but when adventuring into neon, that’s when you have gone over the line into a huge fashion “don’t!”  Also, you do not need to button your dress shirt all the way up, but make sure no under garments are visible, another unprofessional move. I bought many of my pencil skirts from Zara, Express and Bebe; my dress shirts I got at J Crew, Zara, and BCBG!

Next is the classic black blazer. My perfect go to blazer is one that is fitted with slight shoulder pads in it, giving it a chic edgy look, with a few buttons and small pockets in the front. I found my perfect blazer at Zara. It makes each outfit professional yet very fashion forward!

Lastly, black patent leather pumps always make the outfit complete! I saved up at bought some Yves Saint Laurent black tribute pumps, but I also have a pair that looks exactly the same from Steve Madden! Be sure to put an extra cushion in the shoes, they are definitely sky high making them highly uncomfortable!

Now, all you have to do is add a statement necklace or earrings (not both) to make to stand out even more from the rest of the crowd!!! Some perfect statement jewelry pieces come from Banana Republic, BCBG, and Forever 21!

Extra: If you don’t have a blazer, a nice cardigan from J Crew or Banana Republic will work just as great! Also, black pumps are a classic go to, but if wearing khaki or a light gray, neutral color pumps work even better!

Also, ladies, in wearing outfits for business attire or any other occasion, if you are a size 4, buy a size 4; don’t try to squeeze into a size 0. If it makes you feel better, cut out the size tag and just pretend. Trust me no one will be looking in the back of your clothes to see the size your wear, but they will definitely be thinking you need a size bigger if you look like your clothes are painted on you.
