Best Outdoor Winter Activities in the NoCo

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at St. Law U chapter.

Going to school in one of the coldest continental points in the United States can have its drawbacks. However, being able to study within driving distance of Adirondack Park has its perks. Here are a couple of activities that you can participate in during the winter months!

Skiing and Snowboarding

Being a college student, our funds are not that deep. However, mountain owners take pity on our bank accounts and offer discounted passes at almost any mountain. Being only about an hour and a half away from Whiteface Mountain, in Wilmington NY, grab a couple friends and hit the slopes for a day! Through St. Lawrence, passes are available for $285 and apply to Whiteface, Gore Mountain, and Bell Air Mountain. Not an alpine skier? The Outing Program rents Nordic skis to anyone who is looking to try something new! Once you get the skis, the next question is, where should you go with them? Higley Flow is a state park, located right down the road in Colton. Too far away? Hit the golf course! If you are lucky, you’ll find some nice groomed spots, provided by St. Lawrence.

Hiking

Going to school within driving distance of the Adirondack Park is not a common thing. Throughout the area there are many hikes ranging from easy to difficult. If you just feel like a nice, easy uphill walk, try Coney Mountain in Long Lake. If you are looking for something more adventurous, try out one of the 46 high peaks! However, before hiking any mountain in the winter, make sure you check the conditions and that you have the right equipment and clothing to help you make it safely to the top.

Walks

If there was just fresh snowfall, and driving to one of the nearby mountains seems like too much of a hassle, take a stroll down the Saddlemire trail. Located right behind Hulett, it is a beautiful trail filled with dense trees at points, and then turns up to a lovely walkway and an open landscape. Gather together a couple of friends and take a relaxing stroll through the snow!

Ice Skating

Looking to spend some time outside? Go to the outdoor skating rink, located right by the intermural fields. However, you do need your own pair of skates. Once you slip those on though, you’ll be ready for a fun and exciting afternoon!

Snowshoeing

If going for a nice relaxing stroll isn’t intense enough for you, but you don’t feel like hitting the mountains, snowshoeing is your best choice. Head over to the Outing Program to rent a pair of snowshoes, find one of the many trails on our 18 hole golf course and go have fun with friends.
