The 5 Most Common Freshmen Struggles at USC

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at South Carolina chapter.

After being on this campus for almost 3 weeks now, I have learned that there are common struggles that freshmen, especially at USC, are bound to experience. It is OK, we all know the struggle is real and we are in this together.

1. Tripping over Bricks.

You may feel like you are the only one doing it, but trust me you are not alone! Even if you aren’t typically a clumsy person, these bricks are bound to trip you up. Whether you are just walk on the horseshoe on a nice day or trying to walk to class, they will be determined to bring you down. Just learn to pick up your feet more.

2. Being scared for your life…because of a 1-inch roach.

Yes, the campus may be beautiful, but it is not without the occasional roach. Whether you are getting pumped to go out, walking home at night, or (hopefully not) lounging in your dorm room, you may occasionally see one of these gross little creatures running across your feet during the warmer months of the year. Don’t worry, they can’t kill you, they just aren’t pretty.

3. Near-death experiences from bikes, or skateboards, or mopeds…

Forget being run over by cars while crossing the street, getting hit by someone on a bike seems like a much bigger threat while walking to class in the morning. Back in high school you could keep your head down and walk on. Here at USC, you have to keep your head up or you will probably get hit.

4. Staying out ‘til 3 a.m. and expecting your 8:30 a.m. to still be a piece of cake.

Yes, this is college and you should have fun, but staying out late before an early class day is not the best idea. It is best to save the partying for the weekend when you can sleep it off the next day.

5. Actually having to read the readings.

Sadly, leaving high school means much more homework. Having to crack open a textbook is actually necessary to pass a class here. Most of the professors get test questions from the book which will sometimes just tell you exactly what will be on the test. It may be a struggle to actually have to read for a reading assignment, but the GPA will be worth it.
