So I have tried to avoid this topic for as long as possible, but it doesn’t seem like I can hold my thoughts back any longer.  Ever since I can remember, politics have always been a heated subject in my family.  Then that tension moved to school.  I went to a private Catholic high school where it was never spoken about or discussed until my senior year government class.  I have always associated my political opinions with anger and opposition.  I also just don’t feel like I know enough about politics to speak intelligently on the subject.  So I always kept my thoughts and opinions to myself whenever I was involved in a conversation that had to do with politics, or in more recent times, presidential candidates.

Unfortunately, it’s not just my family that has always made me feel nervous to share my political opinions; it’s my friends as well.  My friends and I would never get too into politics, and conversations of that nature, but when we did I was always the one that would not speak a sentence.  The friends that I did have that would discuss politics were, unfortunately, Trump supporters.  I understand that when people start to discuss politics and their beliefs it’s hard to stop them, so I would normally let these friends project their beliefs and thoughts onto me, even when they knew that their beliefs did not match mine at all.  I never knew how to intelligently speak my mind about what I believed in or thought was right.  Especially now as a college student, I am expected to speak intelligently and passionately about topics like this. I haven’t yet figured out how to do it, but I’m going to try.

I haven’t let myself think too much about the last few weeks, and what this idiotic human is deciding to do to America.  I didn’t watch his inauguration, I didn’t go march, I haven’t done any research on any of his executive orders, I’m kind of just acting like none of this is happening.  But I can only do that for so long.  One of the really important things for me in this election was Civil Rights, but that’s quickly been overlooked and forgotten about.  It’s really upsetting to me that the American people have given someone like this so much power.  I know Hillary wasn’t exactly the best either, but I’m sure she wouldn’t be banning immigrants and building a wall and tearing America apart.  I was hopeful that this election would bring all different kinds of people together, and in a way it has, but I’m just waiting for the day that we don’t have to come together because of something negative. I want us to all come together one day just because.
