What to expect when you go home for Thanksgiving

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

It’s almost Thanksgiving, collegiettes! The food, family, friends and just plain time away from SMU all await you! So what can you expect from this short break from your school responsibilities?

Well, it couldn’t be coming at a better time. Between all the tests, quizzes, papers and projects your professors have been assigning because they’re running out of time to torture you, you’re basically on a path to premature death.

In fact, you actually haven’t been sleeping at all, which is why the first thing you’re going to be doing when you get home is sleeping in your own bed. A lot.

It almost won’t seem real.

Unfortunately, someone is going to wake you up eventually to spend time with family. Which, granted, is why you’re home, but still

Cue all of the family members coming to ask you all about college!

But you have nothing to worry about, right? I mean, you’re awesome, you’re at a good school, life is going well! Bring on the questions! You can handle it!

“Any jobs lined up?”

“What are your plans after college?”

“So, why don’t you have a boyfriend, sweetie?”

Yeah…no matter what, you’ll never be prepared for an attack from your relatives.

You’ll consider doing some pretty dumb things at this point. Maybe you should text your ex from high school. He’d be in town for Thanksgiving too, right?

Or find something to drink? It’s 5 o’clock somewhere, right?

Or actually try to watch football?

Chances are though, you’ll wind up just spending time with your one true love: your dog!

Thankfully, the moment you’ve been waiting for has come- the food is ready.

Gone is the dining hall food that always tastes as bland as the day before! Away are the cheap meals at Whataburger you eat at 3 a.m.! This is mom’s cooking at the absolute finest!

Also gone are your lady-like manners. Screw being polite, there are sweet potatoes to eat!

Eventually you’ll start to realize how much you have to be thankful for. The family and love that surrounds you– it’s what helps get you through the day. This is why you do what you do, why you keep striving toward your goals. It’s all going to be worth it.

Plus: Black Friday shopping is coming up!

Sadly, every break must come to an end, and you’ll be brought back to SMU just in time to have to study for finals.

But luckily, you’re now reinvigorated and ready to take on whatever comes your way! Thanks to your family and some turkey, you can defeat any challenge! And Winter Break is just around the corner…

Happy Thanksgiving, collegiettes, have a good one!
