Trigg Watson Burrage ’12

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

Her Campus SMU was able to talk with SMU Senior, Trigg Watson, this week.  He is truly one-of-a-kind.  Collegiettes™may have seen him riding his unicycle to class or performing his magic at various events around campus.  The magician has taken his magic all over the United States and even to London last summer.

Get this: Thursday, April 26 he will be performing his magic show “TRIGG Magic Live!” at SMU’s Hughes Trigg Theatre at 7 p.m.  Admission to the event is FREE with an optional donation to support the local charity Headstart. More event details can be found on Facebook at The Trigg Magic Live Facebook Event Page. Make sure to attend Trigg’s event and read his answers to the questions below.

What is your favorite thing about magic?
When I perform magic for people, I love watching people’s reactions. Experiencing a good magic effect has a way of giving people an escape from conventional reality. All of a sudden things that people thought could only be done in the movies are happening live right in front of them. This can be very exhilarating…the fact that all of a sudden the impossible is possible. When I perform my magic and comedy, I hope that I can let people indulge in a bit of fantasy and, of course, laugh along the way.

How did you get involved with the magic world?
I saw my first magician when I was four years old at a friend’s birthday party. I was immediately hooked. I started checking out magic books from the local library and performing at parties and community events. After moving to the United States in 2001, I started creating my own original magic effects and started competing in magic competitions. I feel very fortunate that magic has taken me all over…from Boston, Reno, Anchorage, Las Vegas…even London this past summer.

What are two things most people don’t know about you?
1) I was born in Australia and lived there until I was 11. Because I have an Australian father and American mother, I have citizenship in both countries.

2) My favorite pastime (apart from magic) is mountain unicycling. Haha yes you heard that right. I take my unicycle and ride on hard-core bike trails. Here’s a link from when I was in Taos, NM riding a trail. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uudmMN3tyOA
I also won the SMU talent show a few years ago playing my violin while riding the unicycle.

What are your plans after graduation?
While I hope to eventually move to New York or Los Angeles, I will be based in Dallas this summer.  I’ll be expanding my magic show by creating new effects, but I also hope to spend some time performing in New York and Las Vegas. At the end of July I will be performing at the Magic Castle in Hollywood- I’m really looking forward to that!
