The Perfect Relaxation: 8 Good Books and a Glass of Wine

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMU chapter.

One of the best ways to wind down after a stressful week is to spend a few hours with a good book and a glass of wine underneath a fluffy blanket. Here are a few books, ranging in genre, that will transport you into another world. A world without due dates or finals. A world where love comes easy and boys know exactly the right things to say. A world that will relax you completely.

1. Perfect Chemistry by: Simone Eckles

Perfect Chemistry is another wrong side of the track, Romeo and Juliet kind of romance but this one is so much hotter. Brittany Ellis is “little miss perfect” and Alejandro Fuentes is “Mr. Gangster.” Force the two to be chemistry partners and you’ve got yourself quiet the story. Sex, drama and violence cover every page of this novel. Best of all, if you fall in love with Alejandro there are two more Fuentes brothers who also star in Simone Eckles’ novels that are just as steamy.

2. Labor of Love by: Rachel Hawthorne

Labor of Love is a short, barely 300 page, romance novel that I personally read three times in middle school. While on a volunteer trip in New Orleans rebuilding houses, Dawn and her friends visit a psychic. The psychic tells each of them who they will fall in love with and BOOM instant drama when Dawn finds her true love on the volunteer trip, too. Caution: hot boys and hardware ahead.

3. Dare You To by: Katie McGarry

The relationship in Dare Yout To begins when the popular baseball star is dared to ask out the new to school skater girl. Drama ensues because of their troubled pasts and conflicting futures. Neither character thought this relationship would be so delicious and now they can’t give it up. I dare you to read this book and not get turned on by Ryan’s smooth moves.

4. Educating Caroline by: Patricia Cabot

If you are thinking the author’s name sounds familiar, it is. Patricia Cabot is one of three names Meg Cabot (you most likely know her from Princess Diaries) wrote under. In Educating Caroline, Lady Caroline wants to be able to seduce her fiancé into loving only her after catching him with another woman. She starts taking lessons in the art of romance from a scoundrel and – let me just say – things get sexy underneath all of those layers of skirts. This is not your typical era novel, but it is one of the hottest novels I have read since 50 Shades of Grey – and Cabot writes better.

5. Divine by Mistake by: P.C. Cast

This one is for all my fantasy lovers out there. Divine by Mistake includes time travel, goddesses, and a ritual marriage to a centaur. I would not normally find half men, half horses sexy but P.C. Cast successfuly portrayed them as such. The adventurous plot also makes you lose track of time and is if you, too, were sucked into Partholon.

6. Game of Thrones by: George R. R. Martin

If you are a fan of the television series because of the action, I would highly suggest you read the books. If you are a fan of the television series because of the romance plots, I would highly suggest you read the books. If you are a fan of the television series because you have the hots for Khal Drogo, I would highly suggest you read the books. Suprisingly, for a man, George R. R. Martin writes incredible sex scenes. He is also able to write a great plot around his incredible sex scenes which some authors have a hard time doing (looking at you E.L. James).

7. Emma by: Jane Austen

Every respectable young woman should keep the classic novel Emma within reach. The story of young Emma Woodhouse coming to age and falling in love with family friend Mr. Knightley takes us back to the 19th century when romance was pure.  A refreshing reminder of chivalry and courtship, back when it was more than just sliding into your DMs. Plus, our fav 90s movie Clueless is based off of this novel.

8. Gone Girl by: Gillian Flynn

Although not a romance but instead a thriller, Gone Girl easily sucks its reader into the world of Amy and Nic Dunne. This is a book that is very hard to put down, so be sure to carve out enough time to sit down and read this one cover to cover. If you have already seen the movie and think the book isn’t worth the read, you’re wrong. The mystery is unraveled by reading Amy’s diary and you get to see just how messed up she really was.
