Must Watch: The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SMCVT chapter.

If you haven’t watched “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” yet, it’s time to get on it. This Golden Globe winning Amazon series is easily one of the most bingeable things I’ve watched to date. From the costumes, to the writing, to the wonderful Rachel Brosnahan, you’ll be hooked. No interruptions allowed. (Side note: Prepare for a lot of gifs. They’re too good to resist.)

After it’s pilot premiered in March 2017, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” quickly skyrocketed to success. The show itself revolves around the story of Midge, a housewife turned stand up comedian who struggles to find her way and pursue her career in 1950’s New York City.

Basically, Midge has got it made: A wonderful husband, perfect kids, and a huge, beautiful apartment. She thrives on this life of luxury, helping husband Joel to pursue his dream of comedy in her spare time. But then, of course, it’s all turned upside down when Joel announces he’s leaving her.

But no, this isn’t a story of a woman lamenting her husband’s infidelity or trying to win him back. In fact, it’s very much the opposite. Confident in every way, Midge is a woman with a huge personality and endless ambition who cares little for the restrictions society places on her. She’s also easily one of my favorite characters of all time.

It’s rare to find a female character (especially one living in the 50’s) who is so completely unapologetic. She doesn’t wallow in self pity or doubt, even when it seems like her life is falling apart. Instead, she picks herself up and relentlessly works to build the life she wants (while simultaneously being charming, witty, and hilarious).

I don’t want to give away too many spoilers, but one need only watch until the end of the first episode to see Midge’s star quality in its truest form.  If you need a laugh (or a whole lot of feminist empowerment), I suggest tuning in.
