Saratoga Restaurant Review: Harvest & Hearth

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

A Gourmet Pizza Pie. That’s Amore.

Are you sick of the pizza in D-hall? Do you miss the crisp taste of hot, straight-from-the-oven thin crust pizza from your favorite hometown pizzeria? Well, you’re in luck because Saratoga Springs has a well-kept secret in Harvest & Hearth. This gem of a restaurant is located right across the river from the Skidmore boathouse, so unless you or a friend row, it’s likely you haven’t heard of it. The space is warm, simple, and inviting. A cool feature is that their big pizza oven is at one end of the room so you can see all the pizzas being made. The staff is neither the most attentive nor the brightest bunch, but they are friendly. The menu boats local, organic, and seasonal ingredients and there are always yummy specials. But most importantly, the pizzas are delicious!
The pizzas come in two sizes: small and large. The small is roughly the size of a dinner plate and is good if you’re not too hungry. The large can easily be split between two hungry friends. I highly recommend Mamie’s Poppy salad (poached organic pears, fire roasted pecans, fresh local goat cheese, homemade all natural poppy seed dressing over organic mesclun greens, $7.95) the Shrooms pizza (wild mushroom blend, caramelized onions, all natural Fontina & Mozzarella cheeses and fresh organic herbs, $8.95 for a small) and the Epiphany (kalamata olives, fire roasted red peppers, red onions, fresh & local 4 brothers goat cheese, all natural Mozzarella cheese & organic rosemary, $9.50 for a small). The brownie sundae ($5.95) is also scrumptious.
However, a warning about the menu. On the menu they offer a gluten-free pizza dough option for an extra $2. If you actually do have celiac disease (where you cannot process gluten) do not eat pizza here. They cook the gluten-free dough in the same oven as the regular dough, thus contaminating it. I specifically took a friend who has celiacs here so that he could eat the pizza only to discover that in the end he could not. So for those with celiac disease: beware. They do have gluten-free dressing if you want a salad.
Harvest & Hearth is an excellent location for parties or a big group dinner out with friends. The staff is very accommodating and allows you to put tables together, and the nature of the menu makes it easy to share food. If you want to split the check do make sure to mention this at the beginning of the meal because they will refuse to do it afterwards. During warm weather months, dining is available on the outdoor patio, making Harvest & Hearth an excellent date spot as well. Whether you and some friends seek shelter from the snow or if you have a romantic evening planned with that special someone you are guaranteed to fall in love with Harvest & Hearth because what’s better than a great slice of pizza with people you love?
