Remy Marin ’15, Editor-in-Chief of Her Campus Skidmore

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Skidmore chapter.

Here at Skidmore, we’re all about lady power, and that’s why we’re so proud of our Her Campus chapter and all of its members. This fall, Remy Marin ’15 will be taking over HC Skidmore as the new Editor-in-Chief and President. Remy has already been diving into her new role by editing and posting content, holding club meetings, and organizing the editorial calendar for the final weeks of this spring semester. We caught up with Remy to learn what it’s like behind the scenes, what she’s up to at Skidmore, and what her plans are for the future.

Her Campus: How did you get involved in Her Campus?

Remy: I have a friend who started writing for Her Campus when we were in high school, so I knew I wanted to get involved when I came to Skidmore. I actually met a writer when I was a freshman, Leah Wolff, and she helped get me in touch with the group.

What do you like about HC?

There’s so much that goes on at Skidmore, and I love getting to recognize the people and events that make our campus interesting. I also think Her Campus gives people the chance to talk about their experiences here through blogs and news articles, even if they aren’t strictly writers or English majors.

What are the challenges?

Students here are so busy that it’s always tricky to ask them to do a lot of extra work. Also, I think outside people are sometimes nervous about sending in nominations and ideas, but we love the input!

What are your hopes for HC Skidmore next year?

To grow our branch even more and host more campus events.

You’re an English major and dance minor. What’s it like straddling the line between traditional academics and the arts?

It’s actually been really eye-opening and allowed me to be creative. Along with my dance minor I’ve been studying dance/movement therapy, and that’s played into how I intersect academics and the arts. For my English Capstone I’m actually doing a senior seminar that looks at disability studies across the humanities, and I plan on incorporating dance and movement as crucial aspects of my thesis paper. I also find that dance often works its way into my personal essays and creative writing and always helps me relax and regroup when school work is getting overwhelming.

What would you like to do with your life? Will media or journalism play any role?

I’m still trying to figure that out. One possible path is definitely journalism, as writing and editing have always been a huge part of my life. Another idea is to pursue arts administration and dance therapy. There are some incredible programs that bring dance to underprivileged and disabled people, and it can have such an incredible impact on physical and mental health.  I can definitely see myself helping to run one of those programs.

What advice do you have for students interested in pursuing careers in media? Or conversely, careers in dance?

Be bold! In both fields, don’t be afraid to reach out to organizations in which you’re interested about internships or volunteer opportunities. Also, take advantage of what Skidmore’s clubs and classes have to offer. There are so many possibilities; you just have to go for them.
