12 SJU Campus Faux Pas

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SJU chapter.

Sleeping on the 2nd floor of Merion Hall

We all know at least one culprit of this. Maybe you were looking for a secluded place to watch Netflix or tend to your Pinterest without the lurking presence of judging eyes. While this campus hideaway is a great place to lounge, try to save the snoozing for the bedroom.

Tanning on Curran Lawn

More conventional places like the beach or by the lake may be a little out of reach, but there’s nothing more distracting than a line of sunbathers in your peripheral vision as you’re rushing to class. Ladies and gentlemen, we all love a sun-kissed glow, but there is a time and most definitely a very specific place for basking in the sun.

Muttering a single word on the 3rd floor of the library, especially “old side”

If the nice lady on the poster can’t convince you, let this be a PSA to all: there are areas of the library designated as “Quiet Zones,” please respect your fellow Hawks. The first floor is a great place to sit with friends and chat while finishing up some work. The second floor can even be a little more lenient if you seclude yourselves to your own room. But please, save the party for the Perch and let the third-floor folk work in peace.

Taking the gluten-free food from Campion

We all know, or have at least heard, about the beauty that is a bag of Glutino pretzel twists. But please try to resist the temptation. Think of your gluten-free hawks who have never known the joy of the pasta station or Campion cookies and please, leave the pretzels.

Not using the walkways between the Chapel and Villiger

There are plenty of options. For whatever feng shui inspired life you choose to lead, no matter your destination, facilities has a path for you. Don’t cut across the grass. Think of all the effort put into reviving that space after a long winter. Respect the lawn, use a walkway.

Not stopping for pedestrians at the crosswalk between Hagan and Starbucks

Let us get our lattes! Dear drivers, we know you’re in a rush to get to class or to work or back to Manayunk, but please keep your eyes peeled for the innocent people on foot. It’s cold, our heads are burrowed in our jackets, and we’re on a mission.

Not holding the door for the person behind you

Here is one act of kindness characteristic of Saint Joseph’s. We loving being kind to one another—and in the simplest ways—so please, stick with the status quo! Hold the door for your fellow Hawks, mind your p’s and q’s, and spread the kindness.

Taking Public Safety to the exact address to the party

Although rolling up in style to your favorite shindig on Woodbine may save some time, but it may also tip off public safety to an easy target. So please, get dropped off at the corner or a spot on campus. Most importantly, stay safe and stay in a group.

Taking selfies with Barbelin in the background

Hail, Holy Queen (Barb)! It’s a rite of passage here at SJU to Instagram Barbelin, at least once, from one of her many glorious angles. Summer, fall, winter, or spring, her beauty is always ready for a close-up. So while showing off our campus’ signature building try not to crowd the shot. Save the selfie for Sunday and let us bask in the uninterrupted beauty of our favorite gal, Barb.

Using the printing stations for personal use

Whether you’re checking your email or putting the finishing touch on a paper, take it elsewhere. Nobody likes waiting in line for a quick print. Sign in, print, and go. You can even make it easier by sending your paper to mobileprint@sju.edu. Now instead of sending your work to yourself and having to log into your email, just walk in, swipe, and print. No more lines!

Walking on the crest in Mandeville

A classic! Rumor has it, any undergrad who steps across the tiled crest in the atrium of Mandeville Hall won’t graduate. Maybe you’re superstitious, maybe you’re not, but out of respect for tradition, try to walk around it.

Ever onward, Hawks!
