How to Maintain that January Motivation

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SFU chapter.

Well everyone, it’s that time of year again: the time when we’re all starting a fresh semester yet again – when most of our inner keeners come out for a short while to start off the new year. Whether it be enthusiasm in the gym, work, or in class, this is the time to be extra on top of things… until that motivation goes flying out the window by the end of the month. Have no fear–below are just a few tips and tricks to help maintain that initial beginning-of-the-year motivation.

Set goals

One of the most effective ways to keep on track is to set goals for yourself, whether they be long or short term. It’s true that sometimes the latter can be tedious, but I find it easiest to do so when I use agendas that are aesthetically pleasing to me; I am currently using a custom made white marble agenda and it just makes staying organized that much more fun!

Eat healthier

Sure, everybody is always preaching about staying healthy, but it’s for a good reason! Even though getting into the health groove is challenging at first, it definitely proves helpful in the long run. Start small: go for a walk/run, mix in a plate of fruits and veggies – nourish your body and you will reap the benefits! You will find yourself feeling more energized and motivated in your day to day life.

Switch up your study spots

Keep your work interesting even if it’s really not. Try out different coffee shops or study locations as often as possible. Staring at the same desk/wall every time you go to study or work will just begin to feel more and more dull and lead to you most likely feeling lethargic. Having all of my classes in Gastown, I am located in the jackpot of cute coffee shops (pro tip: my favourite cute study spot is Buro café) and I find it keeps my mind and interest sharp by switching it up periodically.

Reward yourself

That’s right, rewards aren’t just for trying to train an animal; it works well for us too! This can go hand in hand with the coffee shop tip: treat yourself to a fun new drink at each study visit or find other ways to reward yourself for your hard work. No matter how simple the incentive, it is guaranteed to get you moving along with your work.
