Creating Your New Home Away From Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SDSU chapter.

Anyone who has lived in a dorm will tell you; it comes with restrictions. Dealing with the confined space is a huge adjustment for girls coming from homes with spacious rooms, where the possibilities to add pizazz are endless. When you first move into your dorm room, you can expect four bone-white walls and a window or two if you’re lucky. It looks more like a prison cell than home. But fret not ladies, there a several fun ways to add some charm to your dorm room. HC girls are known for having the coolest rooms on campus. Make your room the place to be this semester! Here are 6 great ways to transform your dorm room into a unique haven conducive to both studying and socializing:

  1. Walls of art

Those bare walls can make your room feel cold and uninviting. The lack of windows can further darken the mood. You can liven up your room by painting it bright colors. You could reveal your inner surfer by painting them aqua, or share your serenity with Zen green walls. Keep the shades bright and light to make your room look bigger and add to a pleasant ambience.

If you aren’t allowed to paint the walls, there is a super cool fix that can turn into a conversation starter when you have company. Urban Outfitters sells this vibrant tapestry for $39.00. Hang it on your wall for an instant wow factor.

Get your roommates involved and make a collage of all your family and friends to make it feel more like home. Add paintings, posters or wall decal stickers on bare walls to make them look chic.

2) Fit for a queen

We all need our beauty sleep. Climbing into a cute, comfortable bed is the best feeling, whether it’s a mid-afternoon siesta between classes or after a night out partying. Once you have a color scheme set, pick out some cute bedding. Target has some chic sets that won’t break the bank. The one below is only $13.98!

Add more pillows to make your bed even more comfy. You can even buy a husband pillow to prop you up if feel like studying in bed. Top it off with your favorite stuffed animal and it will be just like home!

3) Lighten up

Lighting is the key functional feature of your room.  You need to consider multiple options that provide lighting for different parts of the room. You might be up late working on an assignment while your roommate is asleep, or vice versa, and you need to be able to adjust the lighting accordingly. Consider purchasing floor lamps, desk lamps, and even book lights.

4) Flexible furniture

Something is always going on in college. Whether it is a last minute “girls night in” or a cram session with classmates, flexible furniture helps everyone comfortably fit into a small dorm room. Consider investing in a few foldable chairs so when they aren’t being used, you can fold and store them without taking up much space. Additionally, flip-out lap desks are perfect for group study sessions, and the legs fold up for easy storage.

4) Happy feet

A plush area rug will tempt you take your shoes off and get comfortable. It also adds a dash of sophistication to the room and can section off a “relaxation area” where you can add a small couch and television for when you want to spend some quality time with your friends.

5) Knick-knacks

There is so much more you can add to your dorm to make it your own. So let the creativity flow, and add unique touches to pull your room together.

Happy decorating, ladies!
