A Ranking of ABC Family’s 13 Nights of Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SCU chapter.

Last week, ABC Family announced the schedule for this year’s 13 Nights of Halloween. The marathon, set to premiere on October 19th and run through October 31st, includes a variety of films that are sure to get you in the Halloween spirit! Classics like Hocus Pocus and The Nightmare Before Christmas are included on the list, as well as new additions like Dark Shadows. Below is a ranking of the 14 movies that make up this year’s haunted line up!

1. Hocus Pocus

Witches and spell books and black cats, oh my! Hocus Pocus is the perfect movie to watch before October 31st.

2. The Nightmare Before Christmas

The only thing better than a Halloween film is a Halloween and Christmas film! The only negative: you will definitely have the catchy opening song, “This is Halloween” stuck in your head after viewing.

3. Beetlejuice

This is Tim Burton at his best! Watch as a deceased couple decides to haunt the new owners of their house.

4. The Hunger Games

Between Rue’s haunting mockingjay song and the colorful Capitol costumes, this movie definitely delivers a Halloween vibe for viewers.

5. The Addams Family

An iconic film that walks the line of comedy and horror, The Addams Family is a must-watch. Also, Anjelica Huston slays as Morticia Addams.

6. The Haunted Mansion

One of the spookier films on the list, The Haunted Mansion tells the story of a New Orleans-based family who find themselves trapped in a local mansion that’s inconveniently being haunted by 999 ghosts.

7. Coraline

Based on an international best-selling book, Coraline is a terrifying and twisted treat for viewers and one of the better films in the lineup.

8. Monsters, Inc.

While this film doesn’t exactly scream Halloween, who can resist Mike and Sulley?

9. ParaNorman

ParaNorman, created by the same team as Coraline, is another animated success and well-worth watching.

10. Harry Potter 7: Part 1 & 2

While there is no mention of Halloween in either of these films, the dark, ominous tones of both make up for it. Even the movie poster is terrifying!

11. Dark Shadows

Dark Shadows is the newest addition to the lineup. The film, released in theatres in 2012, received mixed reviews but its all-star cast, which includes Eva Green, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, makes it fun to watch.

12. Corpse Bride

Yet another Tim Burton film staring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter! When it comes to Halloween films, Tim Burton can do no wrong!

13. Casper

Once over the initial disappointment that this isn’t the Casper film featuring a young Hilary Duff, viewers will realize that this is still a solid film.

14. Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed

This sequel failed to win over viewers and is the only film unworthy of being included.
