As collegiettes, it is our job to help others and create change in the world–in our communities, or even across the world.  It is up to us to make a difference.

I had the incredible opportunity to intern as a grant writer for Genuine Voices. This nonprofit organization helps at-risk youths find their own “voices” through music.  Juri Love, Genuine Voices’ president and founder created this program 10 years ago with hopes of making a difference in a group of young people who are often overlooked.

“Music would give them a powerful voice to change their outlook on life,” Love said.  “Each youth associated with the program would be able to venture away from a life of crime or a feeling of low self-esteem.”

By teaching students how to play instruments and compose music, they gain power with freedom of expression. These students come to learn that they can change their lives for the better and they have what it takes to be successful.

I was able to interview a GV student who experienced the powers of the program firsthand. The 17 year old was reluctant at first but slowly unveiled his personality throughout the conversation. He was incarcerated in Boston when he met the GV team.

The teen stated, “I was in that life since I was 14. I never wanted to go, but things happen.” He explained how helpful and accepting the GV team was. The teen saw how much GV does for the community and that they actually care. He liked how the team discussed topics about not just music, but life.  It opened his eyes to all the possibilities and opportunities in his life and future.

Music was something this student could use as an escape from the sometimes harsh realities of life. “Music has influenced me by keeping me calm and very cool. It keeps me relaxed. When I am playing piano, I just drown everything out,” the teen said.

This student has high expectations for his future. He hopes to study neurology and make new discoveries in the field, but at the same time helping others. The teen took a bad situation and created a new outlook on life with the help of Juri Love and the GV team.

Love is an inspirational woman who had an idea and acted upon it. She started with serving six youths and now serves an increasing six-hundred students. She gets to witness the transformation and growth of the students.

“The program has changed the way the youths think and act every day,” Love said. “The so-called criminals gave me and other teachers hugs, respect, warmth from the heart, compassion, and genuine love. This is what happens when you take the time to support, listen or even given them an opportunity to strive for a future or an outlet to get their stories heard to the outside world.”

I challenge readers to aim for this type of philanthropy. You might not be able to affect as many people as Love has just yet, but every little act of generosity counts. SAU has many programs that help support the community and surrounding areas. Find your own voice through helping others and spreading your passion.
