5 Ways to Make Your Dorm Feel More at Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAU chapter.

You move into a tiny room with blank white walls and outdated wood furniture and you’re supposed to call it home for the next four years. How is something that feels like a jail cell supposed to give you the same comfort of your cozy room at home? When it comes to making your dorm room YOURS, keep in mind these five things.

1. Christmas Lights

No, not just for the holidays, but for all year long. You can put them around the outskirts of your room, you can crisscross them along your ceiling, and you can even light up a single wall by zigzagging them back and forth. Either way, it’s up to you. This is also an excuse to stop using your ceiling light that reminds you of a hospital.

Target: $5.99 for 100 bulbs (you will need at least 3 boxes to cover your whole room) & $7.19 for 24 hooks which is more than enough

2. Sentsy

We all know that candles aren’t allowed in the dorms, even though that doesn’t always stop us. What if I told you there was a way you can make your room smell great and also add a cute decoration to your room? Well, if you’re interested, I suggest you invest in a Sentsy. No, you do not have to buy a name brand one, I have one from Wal-Mart and it works just as great. Plus, there are thousands of different scents to choose from and they last longer than an actual candle. Plus, you can leave them on when you’re in class, letting you come home to a room that smells amazing.

Wal-Mart: $14-$15 for a Wax Warmer & $2.00 a pack of Wax Cubes (6 ct.)

3. Tapestries

You can have decorations on decorations, but it is very likely that you will end up with that one blank wall that has you stumped. What a more perfect place to add a tapestry!? There are millions of options. You can simply type in tapestry into Etsy.com and there will so many choices you won’t know what to do. This is also a perfect chance to add some color to your room, but if you already have a color scheme going you shouldn’t have a problem finding one that fits. There are also plenty of different sizes.

Etsy: Anywhere from $15.00 to $100.00

4. Pictures

Nothing makes you feel more at home than being surrounded by those you love. However, that isn’t always possible when you move to school. Pictures can solve this problem very easily. Head to Wal-Mart’s Photo Center. It is as easy as bringing a flash drive or plugging in your phone. You can crop your photos and even change the filters for just $0.10 a picture, and they’re done within an hour, less if you don’t go picture crazy. It that’s not a steal then I don’t know what is. You can easily buy some cheap picture frames or tape them to your walls, whatever you choose it not only add to your comfort but also to the look of your room.

5. DOLLAR SECTION!

I’m sure that mostly everyone would agree that Target is the store of all stores. Yes, we love their clothes, swim suits, and their accessories, but what about that dollar section?! I personally check out the dollar section every time I walk into Target, and every time I find some cool new thing. There are little trinkets for your desk, candies, and most importantly, holiday decorations for cheap! What’s homier than decorating for the holidays? The dollar section provides small decorations that are adorable and SUPER cheap.  BONUS: Pinterest

This one is a given. Pinterest is the ultimate place to find ideas to spice up your dorm room. I 100% suggest that you take advantage of it.
