Underrated Restaurants of Salisbury: Caribbean Flava

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Salisbury chapter.

My first time stumbling upon Caribbean Flava was completely accidental. On the way to purchasing fast food I saw the illuminated sign and knew I wanted to give it a try. Upon entering the store it was really clean and inviting. I expressed my excitement when reading the menu because I recognized many of the dishes from my childhood.

I’m blessed to have grown up in the extremely diverse city of the Bronx and fondly remember dining at the Jamaican, Spanish and Chinese food joints sitting at every corner. I come from a Jamaican family so I’m used to having my favorite dishes at family gatherings. It’s hard to find delicious Caribbean food when I’m away from home but this gem may be my new go-to spot for dinner.

Located on East Main St, the restaurant has a variety of dishes at reasonable prices.

If you visit on TUES.-SAT. between the hours of 10a.m-2.p.m. they offer a “Jamaican box lunch” for just $5. It comes with an entrée and three sides.

I debated with myself for a while because it was so hard to choose between the curry goat and the oxtails. After 20 minutes of anxiety and games of eeny, meeny, miny moe I decided on the curry goat with a side of rice and beans, sweet plantains, cabbage and a cup of chicken soup.

Believe me when I tell you the curry goat was tender and had enough spice to add a kick but wasn’t too overwhelming. The chicken soup was incredible. Very hardy, spicy and full of flavor. I’m a self-proclaimed soup expert and can proudly say this one definitely warms the soul.

I will be visiting very soon to try the oxtails, fresh coco bread and to buy another cup of soup of course. I can guarantee the tasty food, open atmosphere, and friendly staff will have you coming back to try more.
