Why you Need a Girl Best Friend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rowan chapter.

In every classic teenage movie, there is the main character, and her trusty sidekick — two girls against the world. Growing up, adolescent girls are bombarded with the idea that the bond of sisterhood — whether it is between two actual sisters or just two girls — is one that will last them their entire lives. Without a girl best friend, you will be stuck with the dudes 24/7, listening to their sports talk, and having them rate girls left and right. (Or something like that.) Personally, I must agree that for once, the media got something right: you need a girl best frined.

As many movies as there are about two gal pals, there are just as many movies showcasing a boy and a girl pair. The duo, in these cases, more or less end their journey the same way: the boy and girl end up kissing, falling in love, and living happily ever after. Although there are plenty of movies where this is not the case, the fact remains that many boy-girl friendships are shown to end with romance, which is definitely not always the case in real life.

Back to girls: They are a necessity. Sure, sometimes they are dramatic, petty, and can do some awful things — after all, we’re only human. At the end of the day, however, they are the ones that give you a shoulder to cry on, give you pads and tampons when need them, and let you drive to their house at 2 AM when you get in a fight with your significant other. Of course, guys can be great best friends as well, but something about having a girl best friend makes your life complete.

I have personally been blessed to have many close gal pals in my lifetime, ones that I will be able to call my best friends for the rest of my life.

Me with Bri, Hailey, and Mariah, best friends that I have had since elementary school.

These three girls have been by my side since we were in 5th grade. They were the people that grew up with me and completely shaped me into the person I am today. They are why I have “a good head on my shoulders,” and I could never articulate just how much they have affected my life.

I met these girls in middle and high school, but I feel like I have known them my entire life. They helped foster my love for music and musicals while helping me through the most difficult time of my life. I will always be thankful to have their support and love.

Jamie, Simona, myself, and Ashley posted up in Hollypointe.

I just met these girls over the summer at college orientation, but they already have secured a piece of my heart. They make every day at college an adventure, give me fun memories, make me insanely happy, and made the biggest transition of my life the best time of my life as well. I already know they will easily stay by my side for a long, long time.

Of course, I have many other important girls in my life, but I figured I would cut myself off before I became more mushy and gushy. Girls, please do yourselves a favor and find yourselves some gals. They will make your lives so incredibly amazing, and will give you bonds that will last a lifetime.
