Life Lessons: Sometimes We Need A Little Rain

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rowan chapter.

Sometimes, all we need is a little rain.

Welcome back, Profs!

If any of you followed Her Campus last year, you may remember that towards the last few weeks of spring semester, I introduced a life lessons blog. This week, the life lesson is a little different. It is me taking what many saw as a bad situation, a stroke of bad luck, and a poorly timed decision by Mother Nature, and turning it into something good.

So, as most of you know, Thursday, September 10, 2015, Glassboro and the surrounding area was hit with a torrential downpour.

I was among those unlucky souls who had to venture out into the storm. In my short walk between the Rec Center and Robinson, I had a flurry of thoughts. So here I am to share those thoughts with you.

For the past few weeks, I have been praying for rain. The heat and humidity were unbearable by many, and quite honestly, they made me (and plenty of others I know) feel utterly disgusting every time I stepped outside. We needed rain.

The downpour could not have come at a better time. Summer is nearing its end and the lovely season of autumn is slowly approaching. During my walk to Robinson Hall, I contemplated the rain, and how symbolic it was.

The flooding created the illusion of canals, washing away muddy sidewalks.

The thick raindrops hit the heated skin of all those outside and cooled them from the heat earlier that day.

Water sloshed against windows, shoes soaked in everything, and all life was given a refresher.

Much like the town of Glassboro and its neighbors experienced this cleanse today, I believe we all did a little too.

The summer is over. Autumn and a new semester are starting. It’s time for a new start. It’s time to wash away all of the mistakes that might be taunting us. It’s time to rejuvenate ourselves for a new semester and a new season.

Autumn is the season of change. Do you have any new resolutions you want to conquer? Why wait for next year? Do you want this semester to be different from all of the past ones? Well, do it. THIS is your chance to start over. If you’re new to Rowan, it is literally a new start. If you are a returning student, this semester is a new one – nothing you did last spring should affect you. It all washed away in the rain.

The storm today marked a new beginning. As the clouds burst open and released all their tension, you should have as well.

It’s a new beginning. Breathe it in.

Love you always.

I am a Writing Arts major at Rowan University. Poetry is my best friend. One day, I hope to be a successful writer for a popular magazine in NYC. My dream is to travel to Paris, London, and Rome to explore and write about my experiences there.
