Halloween How To: Do-It-Yourself Costumes

Fall break is the perfect time to begin brainstorming for Halloween- it is only two weeks away!  A great way to guarantee an original costume is to make it your self and these easy DIY ideas have a costume for everybody.

Something Scary: Carrie

See that woman lurking in the distance? Staring at you with her frightening, bloody gaze? Yes, that’s me. Every Halloween I make my own frightening costume, but this one was by far the best. I’m always drawn to characters from Stephen King novels, and this was my interpretation of Carrie from, well, Carrie. It was SO EASY and cheap to make, and the reactions I received from people were priceless.

What you need:

  • Thrift store “Prom” Dress
  • Crown
  • Bucked of blood

That’s literally it. Put on your dress, hop in a bathtub and dump that blood on yourself. Costume complete!

Something Sweet: Elle Woods
If there’s one thing I remember from the Legally Blonde movie, it’s the bend and snap (works every timeeee!!!!). Elle Woods, the Valley Girl and converted lawyer, knows how to work her greatest assets: big blonde hair, everything pink and Chihuahua, Bruiser.

What you need:
– Pink dress and accessories
– Chihuahua (real or fake)
– Blonde hair (wig or your own)

With this cute costume, you’ll be ready to bend and snap all night long!

Something Else: A Troll Doll
Want to risk being fined with indecent exposure on Halloween? Then the Troll Doll costume is for you. I still have my collection of these adorable childhood toys, including my ‘wish’ troll, which is still granting my wishes over ten years later. This is a great costume to do in a group since everybody can pick another color.

What you need:

  • A nude body suit and leggings or some sort of body covering
  • Bright colored hairspray
  • A cup
  • A sheet of paper the same color as your hairspray

The hair is the most complicated part of this outfit. For guys, just gel your hair until it’s sticking straight up. For girls, stick the cup on the top of your head, covering it with your hair. Use a ponytail to secure your hair covering the cup and spray! Put on your nude (wink wink) outfit and cut out a shape to place over your belly button!
