Senior Spotlight: Meet Zoe Schmidt ’14!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Portland chapter.

Hometown: Salem, OR

Major: Organizational Communication

Describe yourself in 3 words: Funny, determined, and spirited

How long have you been a part of Her Campus Portland?

I joined Her Campus during the spring semester of my sophomore year, so I have been a part of this awesome club for a little over a year! I joined after meeting Julia in my Advanced Public Speaking class and decided I wanted to write about relationships. My position has evolved since then, and I’ve loved every second of it!

What have you loved about being part of HC Portland?

My favorite part is when we all get together and share great ideas for the club. I always love seeing how people can create ideas and bounce them off of each other.

Has your major stayed the same since you first entered University of Portland or has it changed in the 4 years?

My major has stayed the same. I was a Psychology minor and an English minor at one point, but I dropped both of those so I could graduate in three years instead of four.

Where is your favorite place on campus?

My favorite place on campus is in the academic quad. I have some great memories of walking through the quad when it’s nice out and being able to really enjoy the views.

What is an embarrassing moment you’ve had on campus?

Oh boy, there are tons. I think the worst was my freshman year, when it was super icy out and I slipped and fell walking up the little hill into Mehling. People were concerned, but it was incredibly embarrassing because it was during one of the busiest parts of the day.

What has been the most inspiring class you have taken?

Definitely Advanced Organizational Communication with Dr. Dare. I’m not usually too outspoken in class, but I loved going to that class every week and being in a safe environment where I could share my opinions. My friends and I would talk about class all week, especially when we were really interested in a topic. I also capstoned in that class, which only fueled my passion for the topics we were covering.

What will you miss the most about college?

I’ll miss how close everyone is. It’s going to be sad when I can’t just walk over to my neighbor’s house to watch Grey’s Anatomy or call up my friend for a quick run to Cha Cha Cha. I have met some truly amazing people here and I am going the convenience that comes with living in the same neighborhood.

What will you miss the least of your college years?

Reading textbooks for sure. If I don’t see another textbook in my life, I will die a happy person.

If you could give advice to your freshman self, what would the advice be?

I would tell my freshman self to not be so shy and to lay off the Cove wraps. I was extremely shy my freshman year and I wish I had been more open to opportunities and not so set in my ways. Also, those wraps are horribly delicious.

Future plans/ Life goals?

I’ll be staying in Portland, which I am so excited about! After graduation I’m going to Italy for ten days, then when I come back I’ll be starting my job at a company that does both PR and event planning. Dreams do come true.

Dorothy Olszyk is a communication studies major at the University of Portland. Her interests are journalism and graphic design. She is from Eugene, OR and she loves her hometown artist Mat Kearney. What Dorothy loves about Portland is the PB&J cart on NW 23rd  St. and the 90's dances at the Crystal Ballroom.
Hailing from eastern Washington, Julia attends the University of Portland in Oregon, as a Communication Studies major with an emphasis on Journalism. As a magazine and book junkie, Julia reads everything (and anything) she can get her hands on, especially those passionate on young adult culture and entertainment. A woman that gets stir-crazy easily, Julia has been fortunate to have traveled many summers in a row to foreign countries, including a study abroad course in Austria, Germany, and Great Britain. Since a ripe age, she has grown and cultivated her passion and dream of working for a magazine and spreading awareness as well as happiness through the tips of her fingers. Always finding time for herself, Julia can frequently be found quoting movie lines (most frequently Will Ferrell or Vince Vaughn), having a 90's dance party with her roommates, or rereading "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" for the 40th time.
