Becoming A Silver Fox

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

There is always something trending. Whether it is on Twitter or on the runway, some fad is always trendy and hip at any given moment. For the summer and fall, the ombre style was popular. Now it is all about going silver! Yes, it is a little odd to be gray in college but it’s something out of the box. I myself, along with my parents, decided it was a fun thing to do to my hair. Even though all my Dad mumbled was, “I waited 50 years to gray and you are running to turn yourself gray like its water in a desert.” I have never been one to stick with one haircut or color. Just in my two years at Pitt, I have had five different hair cuts and colors. I figured if I’m going to keep changing it anyway, why not go for it? So, I went silver with a purple undertone. I have yet to regret it, so I think I made the right decision. College is the time to experiment, whether its about your future career, your major, your style, or your hair, now is the time to go a little wild before settling down into the real world workplace.

This style of silver was first spotted on the runways during fashion week but then soon moved to celebrities like Kelly Osbourne and Pink. Well, it’s our time to take this hot style and turn it college friendly. If you aren’t ready to commit to dying your full head gray, try doing the tips for a dip dye effect. I started out that way but moved on to my whole head. Dying your tips allows you to be in the trend but not throwing yourself in completely. You can always chop the ends off and you are set! If you decide to go all gray, here are some tips on how to handle it while in college.

1.     Find a salon. This is not the time to try out that box hair dye from CVS.

2.     Talk to the hairdresser and see if your hair is healthy enough and can hold the dye.

3.     Wash your hair with color protection shampoo and conditioner.

4.     If you dye your tips, don’t scrub the ends. The more you rub off, the less that is in your hair!

5.     Use products that protect your hair and keep your color bright. Ask your hairdresser for the best products for your hair type.

6.     Own it! It’s something fun, do it for you!

Today it may be going silver, tomorrow it may be going hot pink. Trends are trends for a reason, so make sure it is something you don’t mind having even after the fad is over!

I have been a proud Her Campus writer since my freshman year at Pitt and I am now the Social Media Editor for the chapter. So excited to see where the chapter will go but sadly I am a senior graduating in 2015 with a Communication and Art History major and Film Studies minor.
