Club Spotlight: Students for a Sensible Drug Policy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PS Berks chapter.

If you’re interested in the war on drugs, community involvement and having fun, this may be the club for you. Students for a Sensible Drug Policy is an international grassroots organization with hundreds of chapters at colleges and universities worldwide.  The Penn State Berks chapter is run by Kimberly Grinberg (senior-American studies) and was formed in 2012.

So What Do They Do?

The PSU Berks chapter of SSDP focuses on educating the campus community about the war on drugs and ways to prevent addiction. They strive to raise awareness and create a dialogue in the community that will ultimately help those who struggle with addiction. The chapter also works to create an exciting and fulfilling experience for members.

“We create an environment where students are welcome to bring their ideas to life, and have the opportunity to be an integral part of a bigger whole,” said SSDP President Kimberly Grinberg. “When we execute a big event, the only thing better than knowing we’ve met our goals, is knowing that it took the participation and effort of each of our members to do it, and we did it!”

What Happens at Meetings?

If you attend an SSDP meeting, you’ll meet a network of motivated students working together to bring awareness to important issues in the Berks community. Be ready to learn more about the war on drugs in a welcoming and encouraging environment. You can expect a collaborative effort toward the club’s  goals through the following tasks:

  • Choose national and local events to participate in

  • Plan campus events

  • Plan field trips

  • Share ideas and engage in conversation

What Exactly Do They Plan?

Here are some examples of recent events, trips and projects:

  • Movies and Munchies: Community viewing of Reefer Madness featuring giveaways, prizes and snacks

  • Field trip to Harrisburg to lobby for medical marijuana legalization in Pennsylvania

  • A lecture on opiate addiction and the rhetoric of addiction

  • Create educational pamphlets with local addiction treatment centers

Where Do I Sign-up?
