Joe Manganiello, ’14

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oswego chapter.

Meet Joe Manganiello! This zealous college student cannot wait to write his way to the top. That is, if he can make it through his busy college schedule he built for himself here at Oswego. Next time you see him be sure to shoot him a smile to help him through his jam-packed schedule.

Name: Joe Manganiello

Year: Junior, Class of ‘14

Age: 20

Major: Double major in journalism and cinema/screen studies with a concentration in screenwriting.

Why: I love writing and all the freedom it allows me. I always say I can write my way through anything, and I genuinely love telling stories.

Hometown: Liverpool, N.Y.

What are your plans for this semester?
Surviving! I have to find a way to organize a presentable resume with over 100 hours of live broadcasts and dozens of articles to choose from, not to mention I am working on a feature-length script and taking 18 credit hours this year.

What is your favorite thing about Oswego?
The diversity on campus and amongst the programs and departments. I couldn’t tell you how many different, new and exciting people I have met in and out of the classrooms here. Oswego has motivated me to become the best version of myself imaginable.

What do you usually do in your spare time at Oswego?
Spare time? Well if I DO get the chance to reflect or relax, it’s impossible to go wrong with watching a movie. I am an avid movie nerd with a Netflix queue filled with over 150 titles that I am still trying to watch. Don’t even get me started on how behind I am in television…

Where do you work?
I work in the Campus Center for the set-up crew, which is a branch of Campus Life. We are the behind-the-scenes people who make sure the classrooms, hallways and the arena are always prepared for whoever reserves them. So, respect the Campus Center!

Any long-term goals after college?
My occupational goal is some creative combination of being an NBA basketball play-by-play broadcaster, sports writer and screenwriter… I am thinking about pulling off all three! My personal goal is to meet as many people as I can in this life and make a positive impact on their existence.

What’s something people would be surprised to know about you?
I play piano. I did theatre in high school and have been surrounded by music since I can remember. One day, I just started messing around on the keys and over time I became pretty decent at it. Music is an unrivaled stress reliever.

What’s your craziest memory that you’ve had at Oswego so far?
My first weekend on campus, actually, I had to rescue my roommate from a random house somewhere near Byrne and Dairy. Despite limited cell phone reception and his obvious inebriation, he and I executed a pretty effective search and rescue. It was one for the record books.

Kaitlin Provost graduated from SUNY Oswego, majoring in journalism with a learning agreement in photography. She grew up in five different towns all over the Northeast, eventually settling and graduating from high school in Hudson, Massachusetts. Kait now lives in the blustery town of Oswego, New York, where she can frequently be found running around like a madwoman, avoiding snow drifts taller than her head (which, incidentally, is not very tall). She has worked for her campus newspaper, The Oswegonian, as the Assistant News Editor, and is also the President of the Oswego chapter of Ed2010, a national organization which helps students break into the magazine industry. She hopes to one day work for National Geographic and travel the world.
