Reasons Why You Should Watch NBC’s ‘This Is Us’

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oneonta chapter.

This past fall, NBC premiered their new hit series, “This Is Us,” and it truly captures every emotion one individual can feel. It might be happiness, sadness, struggle, loss, comfort etc.…the list goes on. The show introduces the Pearson family made up of an extremely talented cast and a beautifully written script.

I will tell you just some of the reasons why you should be watching this show.

The Family

The 3 siblings of the Pearson family: Kevin, Kate, and Randall. Kevin and Kate are twins and have relied on each other ever since they were kids, and Randall was adopted the day he was born. Jack and Rebecca are their parents who they gave them the nickname, ‘The Big Three.’ It really captures the family dynamic they all have when they’re together, whether it is from the flashbacks or present. You’re able to see where it all began and why things are the way they are now. It is the dynamics of birth, marriage, parenthood, and sibling rivalries. You see their struggles, pain, happiness, and it is a whirlwind of emotions.

It’s Relatable

Like I mentioned before, this show throws every emotional curveball it possibly could. We’re human and we all go through things. This show helps us watch what happens to us through the eyes of the characters on this show. Mourning, rejoicing, love through family, relationships, and friends. The lessons you take from this show will help you get through your darkest or lightest of days, believe me.

Accepting Yourself

Personally, my favorite character on this show is Kate. Throughout the show she deals with the struggles of weight loss, and in today’s society, we are constantly dealing with what it means to have the “correct body image.” Kate’s character faces body image issues, facing the importance of valuing yourself, and finding love despite what you look like from the outside. You feel her pain when she tries to give up her unhealthy eating habits, but her motivation is heartwarming.

You Learn to Forgive

Without giving away too much of the show, Randall’s character undergoes a lot of betrayal and struggling to forgive throughout his entire life. Family members have disappointed him but because of his compassion, he learns to forgive. It gives the audience reasons to mend your relationships, and whether it is family, friends, or lovers, it is something we can all identify with.

Jack and Rebecca

The ultimate relationship goals. We may see their road bumps with the struggles of raising three “triplets” and keeping their marriage alive, but it’s something about these two that make you realize why love is the way that it is.  Although they’re just characters, you feel their love. The fights they have, the memories they make, it’s all extremely realistic and you value their relationship completely.

Jack Pearson

Last but not least, Jack Pearson. I can list 100 reasons why he is an incredible character, but to name a few, he is a loving father, husband, and friend. You ABSOLUTELY feel the love he has for Rebecca and the children, but most importantly, how great of a father he is to Randall. You see the struggles he goes through with being a Caucasian father to an African American boy, but how hard he tries and how much he loves him takes your breath away. He sets the bar very high with how every father should be. He instills confidence into his wife, the children, and his pal, and he is definitely TV’s #1 greatest dad. It’s SUPER hard not to fall in love with him after each episode.

The characters, the script, the emotions you feel are unlike any show on television right now. Whether it is happy or sad crying, you end every episode thinking, “Whoever writes this show is a genius,” guaranteed. You will not regret it. You will want to be a part of the amazing Pearson family.
