What to do When it is Freezing Outside

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OK State chapter.

Although Mother Nature has been merciful this year, we can all agree that kinda cold is still cold. Who wants to go outside right now? Not me. Thankfully, there are still fun things to do inside that won’t leave you too ridiculously bored.

1. Read a Book

I know, I know. The last book you probably picked up was a “classic” on your school’s mandatory summer reading list back in 2009. And who has time to read anymore? Between classes, a part-time job, and all the extra things we’re involved in, the little time left over in my life is dedicated to napping (that’s just me). But, the break before second semester begins, or even boring “syllabus week” is the PERFECT time to snuggle up with a good book. It doesn’t have to be an 800-page novel! Just find something that interests you and get reading.

2. Get Crafty

The craft gods have gifted us with not only a place to find unlimited craft ideas, but a place to store these ideas as well. Pinterest. Pinterest is a never-ending resource that will provide you with all the inspiration you could ever need! Turn on some music, get out the paintbrushes and make that masterpiece.

3. Organize Your Life

With the spring semester just around the corner, now is the perfect time to evaluate everything you’ll need to survive the second half of the school year. From school supplies to laying out your schedule, you will thank yourself for pre-planning when you’re neck deep in homework and studying!

4. Movie Marathons

There is noting better than getting together with friends and spending a fun, relaxing day inside! Invite over a few close companions and encourage everyone to bring their favorite movies, board games, and snacks. And of course, you don’t HAVE to watch the movies in silence with all the lights off. HAVE FUN with it! Let the movies play in the background while you catch up or play games.

5. Clean Out Your Closet

Being a girl, I know that it is embedded in our DNA to hate absolutely everything in our closets but cry when we have to throw anything away. However, being stuck inside is a blessing in disguise for your wardrobe. Go through your favorite fashion blogs or Pinterest boards to find items worth salvaging and pair up items that you forgot you had. Then, as hard as it is, GET RID of everything you haven’t worn lately. You’ll have more room for the new clothes you’ll inevitably buy, and you’ll have a better idea of what you already have.

(You can even make a buck or two off of your clothes by selling them back to places like Plato’s Closet or Daisy Exchange in Tulsa, or the app Vinted. Cha-ching!!!)

6. Get Out of the House

Sometimes our relentless boredom comes from the familiarity with our surroundings. If you find yourself dreading an afternoon, get out of the house and find something fun around town. If you live in a small city, pack the car with some friends and make a road trip out of the day! Find a cute coffee shop or mall to walk around in. Whether you’re looking for a quiet space or somewhere to distract your thoughts, an escape from our daily habits can be refreshing.

No matter what you do to escape the winter blues, don’t forget that the struggles will not last forever! Summer is just around the corner.
