Top 5 Job Fair Tips

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OK State chapter.

1- Dress business/ casual
Don’t show up in jeans and a t-shirt.  You want to make your best impression and first impressions say a lot about a person. Be sure to dress comfortably but also nice.  Don’t try to be someone you’re not but also take style tips from people you admire.  Take a nice pair of black sacks, a cute top and cardigan or suit jacket and don’t forget that portfolio!

2- Bring about 5-10 resumes
You never know when you will need extra resumes. Whether you spilled something on the one you brought, or more than one company needs a resume its better to be safe than sorry! However, make sure you don’t waste your resumes on companies you are not interested in, save the resumes for the companies you care most about. Don’t forget you can never go wrong with having more than what you need, so make sure you run by the library to print out extra copies!

3- Get straight to the point
Make sure you have a 30 sec to a minute speech prepared. Do not quote your speech word for word or you will sound like a robot by the third or fourth recruiter, however, use the speech as a guideline. Do not go off subject. This will help you be more comfortable. Remember the more comfortable you are the less worried you will be!

4- Follow up with the recruiter
It is helpful to follow up with the recruiter after the job fair if you have their email. A professional email to thank them for their time will help them remember you, and also let’s them know they have did their job correctly. Let their last impression of you be a good one!

5- Sell yourself
Last but certainly not least make them remember you, in a good way of course. Greet them with a firm handshake, make eye contact, keep a smile on your face, and be confident in your speech. Avoid using “um” and “like.” Also make sure you are not fidgeting, it makes you look nervous. Stand tall and believe in yourself!
