5 Ancient Tricks and Treats We Still Buy into on Halloween

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at OK State chapter.

1. Jack o’ Lanterns:

Carved pumpkins were originally put out on doorsteps to keep away evil spirits throughout All Hallow’s Eve, and into the month of November. Now we use that as creepy decorations that light up our homes.

2. Costumes:

Costumes came about in Ancient days along with the festival of Samhain (the holiday that soon became known as Halloween). We have definitely transformed this tradition; while some costumes are certainly still scary (i.e. clowns), there are still plenty of half clothed nurses running around to even it out.

3. Trick or Treating:

Originally, people would set out tables full of treats for the spirits roaming around on that night. As it grew and people were wearing more “realistic” costumes, they began giving out food at their doorsteps simply, because they couldn’t tell who was human and who was not. As for now, everyone trick or treats, and we all know which house will give out toothbrushes and which one that will give out full sized candy bars.

4. Bobbing for Apples:

Bobbing for apples started as a courting ritual that was part of a Roman festival honoring Pamona, the goddess of agriculture and abundance. Basically, if both you and your S/O caught an apple, then you could tell the future of your relationship.

5. Black Cats:

These dark, little felines were thought to be symbols of the Devil. They were thought to be the witches “familiar” animals. So be careful if a black cat crosses your path…

Even though we have strayed away from the meaning of these traditions, we still to this day enjoy our cute costumes, and buckets full of candy! Have other Halloween traditions that you still follow? Tweet us @HCOklahomaState some of your favorite ones!
