A Senior’s Sibs Weekend…Without Her Sib

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

Ohio University is great for a lot of reasons. It has highly ranked educational programs, the campus is beautiful to the point of cliché and of course, we’re one of the top party schools in the nation. One of the many things I’ve come to love during my time here is Sib’s Weekend. It’s the one weekend at OU reserved for people of all ages, a time when younger sibs can relish in a weekend without parents and older sibs can cut loose uptown.

Every year, my younger sister Lauren, who’s 19 to my 22, has come down for Sib’s Weekend. We’ve done everything that campus has to offer including events in Baker, a house party and our yearly tradition of seeing a movie at the Athena Grande. Lauren probably won’t be able to make it this year because she’s forging her own collegiate path at Miami, trust me I know, and the distance doesn’t make a visit feasible.

Although she visited the second week of the semester, it still makes me a little sad to know she won’t be here that weekend. It means that we’re getting older; that we may miss things in each others’ lives that we don’t want to miss. Time has a way of nosing its way into peoples’ lives when nobody asked for it to be there.

It doesn’t mean we’ll be any less connected though. Honestly, my sister is my best friend. It’s not in the “we’re related, so we have to be friends” kind of way either. It’s in the way that I consider her a confidant and know that I won’t be judged for what I say. I believe that I am truly lucky to have Lauren in my life. Despite all of our differences, we count on each other for guidance on the trivial, like splurging on a pair of shoes, and the not so trivial, like boys, totally gross.

Her not being able to make it for one last Sib’s Weekend makes me appreciate the ones we spent together even more. They’re memories that stick with you when you’re having a bad day. They make you feel happy, maybe even a little nostalgic. I look forward to creating new memories as we come into adulthood and our relationship changes.
So fellow students, enjoy your Sib’s Weekend. Do anything and everything you can think of with your sib. It’s an ancient saying, but it’s totally true: time moves too fast.
