It’s that time of year again, when beards swarm the streets as guys begin to participate in the slightly controversial “No-shave November.” It is only a slight controversy because some find it humorous, while others find it disgusting, although it seems hard to hate a man with a nice beard. Many people, like myself, see this as some sort of funny trend that started a few years ago, but a simple Google search tells us so much more.
Many people, including those who participate in No-shave November, have no idea of the reasoning behind it. No-shave November began in 2009 on Facebook as a way to raise cancer awareness. The website (no-shavenovember.com) says to participate, simply stop shaving and waxing. They also accept donations that help raise cancer awareness and help those battling cancer. Proceeds from the merchandise sold on the website go to The American Cancer Society. The products ship free if you live in the U.S. as well.
Men have quite the advantage of participating in this month-long event; however, it is not impossible for women to join. If you needed another reason to slack on shaving as the weather cools down, this lets you put down the razors and waxing creams. If you decide not to go that route, you can easily donate money to the cause or buy a funny t-shirt from the website.

This November, we can go about the amusing occurrence known as “No-shave November” while knowing the reason behind it. Every time you see a beard, you will know that that beard, intentional or not, is raising cancer awareness to those who know about the organization. Possibly the best way you can participate, besides donating money or ditching your razors, is by letting others know about the true concept behind No-shave November. Let it grow!
