How to Make Your Dorm Room Feel Like Home

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ohio U chapter.

It’s your first year in college… which means your first time in a dorm. First time sharing a room with one or more people. Being away from home is hard enough as it is at first, but then comes along the whole getting situated ordeal. Should you bring your favorite zebra-striped curtains? Or what about your favorite fluffy white rug? What if your roommate/roommates don’t like something? What if it’s not cool enough? There are so many deciding factors that come along with decorating your dorm room for the very first time. Or second time, or third time… But the good part of it is that it’s always fun!

Being a freshman in college and having three other roommates, we definitely had a lot to figure out for the dorm when it was time to move in. We have a quad, which is basically two rooms separated by a door. The one room is our “living area” full of desks, a futon, a comfy chair, ottomans and a fridge/microwave. The other room is the bedroom, obviously where beds, clothes and miscellaneous items are located. Anyway, I’m here to tell you how to make your dorm help you feel as most as home as possible. And don’t you be worried, girls, it is not hard to do!

Step 1: Decide on a theme

  • Make sure you and your roommates are all in the same boat. You don’t want one of you bringing a ton of purple themed items and another one of you bringing a ton of yellows. That just doesn’t go! The more matched, the better.
  • Maybe just choose a simple color scheme, like blacks-and-whites. Or if you’re feeling more excited and fun, choose 2-3 specific colors to work around!
  • For example, my roommates and I decided to do a lot of blacks-and-whites, but also with our own little color spin. (We all got similar colored bed spreads, but chose different colors to spice it up a bit! We love it!)

Step 2: Make sure you know who is bringing what!

  • It’s always important to split up the items. Being able to go shopping with your roommates beforehand is always nice, but it’s just as easy to split it up otherwise!! Considering our rooms are already equipped with a fridge/microwave, some other necessary items may be: a printer, a futon, a keurig, a chair, ottomans, garbage cans, storage bins, lights, etc.
  • Here’s an example of our room:! We got a fuzzy chair, some ottomans used for storage, a nice futon, a tapestry and a printer!

Step 3: Decorate!

  • This is the most fun part! Bring anything and everything you can to make your dorm room look the cutest and feel the comfiest! Some simple items you could bring could be: your favorite blankets, pictures of you and your friends/family accompanied by cute picture frames, cork boards, Christmas lights to string around the room, etc.

It really isn’t hard to turn your boring dorm room into the cutest room on campus! I absolutely love my room now that it is so comfy, cozy and comfortable! Having a little touch from home can really go a long way and I encourage you all to do it to help make your college years, the BEST years!
