The Secret Ingredient

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NYU chapter.

You’ve heard of putting fancy oils on your skin and hair, but what if you could put the miracle elixirs in your makeup as well? Throw out your bottles, because it turns out some of your favorite cosmetic brands have read your mind. From CVS to the Nordstom beauty counter, these brands have taken to infusing their products with blends of Argan and Marula oil for easy application and around the clock moisturizing.

If you’re a newbie when it comes to oils, here’s the DL. Argan oil is an oil taken from Morrocan-native trees and is used cosmetically for the fortification of dry skin and hair. Since 2007 the number of Argan oil products on the market have risen by hundreds as companies have found that it’s extremely effective at achieving radiance. Marula oil, on the other hand, is less popular and more unheard of, but I’m calling it now: it’s totally the new alternative to Argan oil. It’s similar in that it comes from the fruit of the Marula tree in Southern Africa, but women native to the area have been using it for centuries as a natural moisturizer. While it doesn’t have as much of the ‘shine’ factor that Argan offers, it makes up for it by innately cleansing and conditioning the skin. In fact, during drought periods, women in Africa would ditch soap and water and use Marula oil as a substitute.

From eye shadows to lip balms to bronzers, these unique products are infused with these key ingredients to keep your face looking clean and hydrated no matter the season. Get ready for the ultimate makeup upgrade.
