5 Ways to Rock the New Denim Skirt Trend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at NYU chapter.

Denim skirts have suddenly been popping up everywhere, whether it be at Washington Square Park or in Kimmel. Although denim skirts used to be all the rage in the 1990’s (think Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake circa 2001), they’ve come back with more style and class than ever before. The lengthy denim skirts we once knew are long gone and now replaced with A-line fitted skirts with buttons down the front. If you want to know how you can pull off the latest street style trend, you’re in luck. I’ve done the style hunting for you and put together five looks that make this Topshop denim mini fit for any occasion.

1.     Edgy Minimal

By pairing your favorite denim skirt with neutral colors, you’re already in Manhattan’s dress code: black. This look works great with any tight-fitting neutral top, but the stripes add a little extra style. You can also adapt this style to cold weather by wearing black tights underneath and a black blazer over top. Pair it with your favorite purse and heeled boots and you’re ready to take on the city!

2.     Preppy

Button down skirts are a must for any preppy look, but the cropped version looks even cuter with a denim skirt. Pair it will a cropped fitted blazer and cool colored bag for the sweetest preppy look around! You can even accessorize with some delicate earrings and slip on sandals. Want to turn this into a fall look? Add some light colored tights underneath and white flats. Don’t forget to grab your favorite Lily Pulitzer agenda book on your way to class!

3.     Groovy 1970’s

Channel your inner hippie with this 1970’s inspired denim skirt look. You can update this look by mixing your favorite denim skirt with a cropped maroon turtleneck and rounded sunglasses. Maroon and mustard yellow always seem to convey a 1970’s look, but modernize them by mixing them with modern accessories, like a high heeled clog shoe. Put on a chunky cardigan when it gets a little chilly out and your fall look is set. Grab your favorite suede bag or backpack and you’re ready to go!

4.     Feminine

Don’t feel like you can’t be girly while wearing a denim skirt! Easily pair it with a cropped sweater, like the pastel furry cropped sweater shown above. Delicate accessories are key to creating a feminine look, so make sure to put on some small earrings, like pearls or diamonds. Add your favorite bangle and cat-eye sunglasses and the outfit is simply adorable. The final touch? Pair the look with a plaid purse, like the Kate Spade bag shown above.

5.     New Bohemian

The Bohemian look has been trending for quite some time now, but it’s time to upgrade it with a denim skirt! White halter tops with either lace or pom-pom balls do quite the trick! Don’t try to add tons of patterns all over the place, but simply pick one accessory that is bright and colorful. The clutch bag shown above is an eye-catching piece that will create a Bohemian look without making the entire outfit too chaotic. Add some turquoise studs and fringed heels and you’re all set!
