The Freshers Goodbye List

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Nottingham chapter.

I can’t believe that my time as a Fresher is pretty much over. It was of course, everything I was told it would be. However, moving to University happened in such a blur of nerves and excitement that only now do I have time to reflect. All I know for certain is that it is expensive and busy…and expensive. Despite desperately trying to plan how I would introduce myself to people (in an outfit Victoria Beckham herself would be proud of) there are a few things that I will always remember about beginning my journey as a fresher.

1)    The first will be your mum’s tears when she finally realises that “her baby is growing up.” If your parents are anything like mine, the morning you leave they will insist on bringing out a photo album full of your baby pictures, just to prove that you have in fact, grown up.

2)    You will also be forced to say goodbye to every possible family member you know, however distantly related they are. After the grateful receiving of presents and money (how else will you pay for alcohol?!) the serious ‘goodbyes’ begin and you just know your mom is going to burst into tears – again.

3)    Don’t forget the fake friends and the cheesy guys, those people who message you to say how much they’re going to miss you even though you haven’t seen them since year eight. Make the conversation short – thanks but no, you are not allowed to come and stay in my room. No, you will not be coming to Nottingham and partying with me. No.No.No.

4)    PRE-PLANNING THE OUTFIT. Any girl will know that first impressions count for everything because sadly, yes, people still judge a book by its cover. You will have to plan your clothes, hair, makeup and shoes, and remember that heels are a big no when your new room is on the top floor, sigh. For me, I wanted to look studious but also 90s chic. Like Legally Blonde meets Clueless. Who doesn’t want to be Cher?!

5)    Finally my biggest regret was thinking I would be too embarrassed to take all the cold and flu tablets my Grandmother had given me. I wish I had accepted every Flu-plus and Paracetamol packet gratefully and treated them like gold dust. The nights are fantastic but the mornings are hell. I did not need a million different shading pencils but I did need Strepsils. Freshers’ flu is not a myth and its gets everyone. Yes, even you.
