Top 10 Things to Do During an Away Game Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

You did it! You’ve survived your first three weeks of classes and your first two home games. This week the game is in Indianapolis. Suddenly, you’re left wondering What do I do now? Fear not! There are so many wonderful things you can do this weekend. Here’s a list of the top 10!

1.  Go to the mall.

For starters, the bus to the mall is free. It can be great to get off campus and see a little more of South Bend. Grab some friends, have a bite to eat, do some shopping, and pet the puppies at the pet shop. This is a great way to relax and find a cute outfit for the weekend.

2. Go to the away game.

No home game, no problem! Buy yourself a ticket for the Shamrock Series game in Indianapolis (they’re only 45 dollars through the Alumni Association). You can buy them here.

3.  Go to or host a game watch.

A lot of the dorms and different student groups on campus host game watches with free food. You can attend one of those, go to a bar to watch the game, or even host one of your own. Wing dip, anyone?

4.  Clean your room.

I know this isn’t exciting, but if your floor has 12 pairs of shoes scattered across it and a pile of clothes on your chair, it’s probably time for a bit of housekeeping. Clean your room, do some laundry, and uncover your desk. Your zen for next week will be so much better.

5.  Do a DIY project from Pinterest.

We all have that board of crafts you want to try, so why not pick one to complete this weekend. Make yourself a new hair bow, turn a mason jar into a pen holder, or create that cool photo board you’ve always wanted. This is a good time to unwind.

6.  Go out to dinner.

No alumni overrunning the restaurants, no families wanting to eat with you, and no demands on you. Why not try a new restaurant like Barbici or explore the many great places to eat in South Bend? Go to Fiddler’s Hearth if you’re looking for an authentic Irish pub, to Polito’s if you’re looking for the best vodka sauce in town, or to Evil Czech Brewery if you’re into great craft brews and creative food pairings.

7.  Have a girl’s night.

Boys are wonderful, but sometimes you need to pull out the wine and nail polish. If you’re craving a chick flick, About Time was absolutely amazing. You can always pull out oldies but goodies like Mean Girls or John Tucker Must Die.

8.  Sleep.

You’re probably already a little (or a lot) sleep deprived by this point in the school year. There have been some colds and flus going around already, so be sure to take your vitamins and catch up on your sleep.

9.  Go to a party or bar.

You can sleep in late Saturday morning, so why not spend a night out on the town, at a house party, or even dorm party hopping. Sometimes you need to let loose. Let your hair down, grab your favorite little black dress, and throw on some high heels.

10.  Catch up with your bestie from home.

We all know how absorbing school can be, but don’t forget to check in with your best friend from home. Schedule a skype date or call them up. It’s always great to catch up and hear about all their latest antics.

Notre Dame

Maria is finishing her Masters in English at Notre Dame. She has read many good books and several bad books, but she usually tries not to finish those. Her current favorites are: 1984, The Book Thief, The Tragedy Paper, Code Name Verity, Dr. Copernicus, I Am the Messenger, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and of course, Harry Potter. She is writing her second thesis on Harry Potter, exploring notions of authorship and reader agency in the digital age. She even managed to write her Capstone on British Children's Literature and designed her own Directed Readings Course on Notre Dame history during undergrad. Her favorite way to read is with a mug of tea and scented candles. When she doesn't have her nose stuck in a book, she can be found binging on the BBC (Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, Sherlock, Merlin [RIP]). Her favorite color is purple, she studied abroad in London, and she enjoys being an amateur painter. She harbors a not-so-secret dream of one day writing a children's book, but until then, she is likely to be found reading them and writing letters whenever she gets a chance. She hopes to teach English or work in a university sharing her love of education.
