BFF’s: Rebecca Mayus ’15 and Helen Zhang ’16

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Notre Dame chapter.

Meet Rebecca and Helen, two gals from South Quad that have been friends for years now (and they’re my friends, too). They have a lot in common – they’re both Glynn Family Honors students, they’re both pre-med, and they’re both members of the BEST club on campus: Mustard! I had the pleasure of sitting down with both of them to discuss the important things in life – such as free food.

Q:  First off, how did you two meet?

RM:  We met during a Mustard (ND’s creative writing club) meeting. We both enjoy creative writing, and when we talked to each other about our work afterwards we recognized each other’s inherent awesomeness and started to hang out more.

HZ:  We met at Mustard. Rebecca was reading a piece she wrote and I thought she was SO COOL.

Q:  You’re both Glynn students, so for everyone that doesn’t know, what’s the big deal about the Honors Lounge?

HZ:  The lounge is a public place to sleep, but it’s less public than the rest of O’Shag. It’s also a nice place to meet other Glynn kids.

RM:  Good food, coffee, and conversation! (Is this enough? I dunno man, this is my honest answer).

Q:  You could’ve mentioned that the food is free, but I digress. What do you both plan on doing after graduation?

RM:  I’m hoping to attend graduate school for a doctorate in bioarchaeology (studying human skeletal remains in archaeological contexts). The long-term goal right now is academia.

HZ:  I have this vague plan of taking a gap year and doing service in a rural area of the country, mostly to spend time being a person with other people and generally being more situated in preparation for the Rest Of My Life. And hopefully, I’ll be going to med school somehwere on the West Coast, preferably Pacific Northwest.

Q:  You both live in neighboring dorms, Badin and Howard. Argue your case for the superior dorm–go!

HZ:  Howard is amazing for the women who live here and the building itself. I love that we have such a small number of people here – it makes it all the more easy to meet one another and develop a close-knit community. And I swear, there isn’t a single room here that’s exactly identical to another one, which makes everyone’s room layout and decorations very interesting. Plus, no other dorm-sponsored event beats Totter for Water. TOTTER FOR WATER.

RM:  Badin all the way! We have tons of singles, hot chocolate in the winter, a ukelele club, and Sister Denise. What more could you want in a dorm?

Q:  Lastly, what’s your personal style?

RM:  My style varies each day based on what I have to do (midterms and finals are all about sweatpants and t-shirts). But right now I am a huge fan of whatever keeps me the warmest. This mainly means big fluffy coats, big fluffy scarves, and big fluffy hats. I also have a weakness for eccentric sweaters – my favorite is bright pink with a hedgehog design. Main accessory: half-full (I’m an optimist) coffee cup.

HZ:  My style is all about color and comfort. It’s really important for me to be warm (or not hot) but have colors that fit together nicely – mostly autumnal, dark colors. I generally don’t wear pants and do some kind of combination with tights. Sweaters and collared shirts are wardrobe staples. As for accessorizing, my overgrown hair and eyeliner with overlong wings.
