Creative Ways to Celebrate Mother’s Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northwestern chapter.

Although Mother’s Day is just around the corner, most of our mamas are miles away from Evanston.  You may not be able to be there to bring her breakfast in bed or watch her read your cheesy Hallmark card, but there are plenty of ways to show your mom how much you really love her. Here are a few ways, outside of just online shopping or a phone call, to partake in the holiday from a distance.

Parental Pampering

Every mom could use a little extra TLC, especially when she’s not seeing her daughter on Mother’s Day. Call up a nearby nail salon or day spa and make your mom an appointment—maybe a mani/pedi, massage, or facial—for Sunday. Print out a confirmation of the date and time and slip it into the card you send her in the mail, so when she opens up the envelope she’ll get an extra special surprise.

Create Your Own Card

In the past, you may have given your mother a store-bought card every year; but, if you really want to make her day feel unique, don’t even bother walking down the Mother’s Day aisle in CVS. Write out a list of all the specific reasons why your mom has truly had such a strong influence on the woman you have become today. It’ll make her feel so proud to be a mother, and won’t just get lost in a stack of old paper cards from past years—it’s something she’s going to want to hold on to.

Shipping Sweets

If your mom has a sweet tooth, you can still satisfy her sugary cravings from a distance. M&M, Williams-Sonoma, Veronica’s Treats, and Sprinkles Cupcakes are among the many companies that allow you to personalize products online with photos, phrases, and letters, which you can then have delivered directly to your mom’s door. She’ll be grateful for the treats and even more grateful for the thoughtful touch.

Coupon Clipping

Give your mom something to look forward to by making her personalized coupons! Write things like “one free movie night in,” “one free home-cooked meal” or “one free brunch date at our favorite restaurant” on colorful pieces of paper and send her a stack of them in the mail. You can even throw in a few promising to do her laundry or do all of the dishes—she’ll definitely remember to save them!

Virtual Walk Down Memory Lane

Moms love nothing more than a creative gift, but being far from home makes being crafty a little more difficult. Luckily, technology makes giving sentimental gifts easy and mess-free. Go to timeline.knightlab.com, where you can make an interactive timeline (complete with pictures and stories), highlighting important moments and fun little memories that you’ve shared. When your done, all you have to do is email your mom the link—an affordable and efficient way to transport a lot of appreciation.
