Top Netflix Picks for a Snowy Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

Now that it is January, less of your free time will be spent party hopping around Mission Hill or window-shopping at Newbury. Why? Because it’s freezing. Many of your Friday nights will be spent watching movies with girlfriends or binging on a new TV show. If you are out of options, here are some of my personal favorites on Netflix right now to occupy you through the winter.

      1)   House of Cards

If you haven’t seen the show everyone’s been talking about, start now. Season three comes out February 27th, so now is the perfect time to catch up.

2)   Friends

Since Friends is now available on instant stream, you have no reason not to watch one of the most renowned shows of all time.

3)   Stuck in Love

This movie is about a man (Greg Kinnear) trying to move on from his divorce and how the divorce is affecting his two kids, played by Lily Collins (known for her strong eyebrow game) and Nat Wolff. It’s a good choice for a Wine Wednesday type of night.

4)   The Wolf of Wall Street

The first time you saw this movie you may have been shocked and disgusted. Until you realize it is an over-exaggerating satire about Wall Street’s old culture and find the black humor in it. Also, who wouldn’t want to watch Leo for three hours?

5)   Living on One Dollar

Most young adults in America do not worry about life threatening disease, going hungry, or living on pennies a day. However, four friends decide to see how that feels by living on just $1 a day for two months in Guatemala.

6)   Mad Men

Mad Men ends this year so catch up on the life of Don Draper while you can!

7)   The West Wing

For the fans of Scandal and House of Cards, here is another show that will provide you with a fix for political drama. In fact, there are 156 episodes to entertain you for quite a while.

8)   The Killing

This was originally on AMC but Netflix finished it to conclude the series. For anyone who likes Law and Order, this show is a creepier substitution.

9)   Almost Famous

If you haven’t seen this movie, go watch it right now! It is about a teenage writer for the Rolling Stones who tours with a rock band to get his first cover story and sees the privileges and downfalls of being famous. It is semi-based on the real life events of Cameron Crowe, who toured with bands such as Led Zeppelin and the Eagles.

10) Blackfish

Blackfish is a documentary about the sea whale Tilikum, who killed three people at SeaWorld. While he may seem like a killer, the film investigates how the inhumanity of capturing sea whales may negatively impact their behavior towards humankind.

11) Hungry for Change

This documentary is a real look at how to lose weight and how messed up the health industry is since many businesses ambush their client’s ability to keep weight off so they keep coming back.

12) Dear Zachary

This film will probably make you cry, but you should watch it anyway. After a man’s friend is murdered by his pregnant ex-girlfriend, he decided to film a documentary about the newborn’s father, so he knows what he is truly like.

13) American Beauty

If you want a movie that leaves you looking at the world in a different way, watch this movie. You will get that “OMG” moment by the end.

14) Drinking Buddies

Besides the very talented stars in this film, the cool thing about it is that it never had a script. All the actors relied on their skills, improv and chemistry with one another to come up with a relatable rom-com.
