SGA Elections: Candidate Spotlight

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Northeastern chapter.

We recently sat down with sophomore Morgan Helfman, a candidate for the ongoing SGA elections! She is running for Executive Vice President with Eric Tyler on the IgniteNU slate and has been involved with SGA considerably since coming NEU. She is a Political Science and Sociology major with a minor in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies; keep reading to find out more about this candidate, her inspiration and goals!

Why are you running for SGA?

I’m running for Executive Vice President of SGA because I love Northeastern, however I see a lot of room for positive change that can occur. I know I have the experience and passion needed to advocate for these changes on behalf of the student body.

What have you previously been involved in on campus?

This past year I have served as Vice President of Student Affairs in SGA which has given me the opportunity to meet some amazing people and work on important projects such as celebrating diversity and international students by planning this year’s Carnevale, the annual cultural celebration put on by the International Student and Scholar Institute. I have also been working on making the sexual misconduct policy more fair to survivors and making sure the school is in compliance with Title IX. I have also been involved with Husky Ambassadors and NUTV.

What would you hope to change/do if elected?

My campaign’s tagline is Sparking Communication, Effectiveness, and Tangible Change, and this is what I, along with Eric, my running mate, hope to implement. SGA has done some pretty amazing things this past year. Unfortunately, no one seems to know about it because we put such an emphasis on recruitment and not on what we can do for you. Some of the things we want to put in place are a peer to peer mentoring network, a gender resource center, and an improved co-op evaluation system.

Who are your role models?

My biggest role model is my mom. She never fails to impress me with her unyielding strength and the amount of love she has for everyone.

What do you want to be when you grow up/what is your dream job?

My dream job is to run a women’s center and fix policies regarding women’s issues.

Anything else you want to share?

Voting is open on the MyNEU homepage now until April 1st. Vote IgniteNU!
