What’s Happening To American Idol?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

Selecting new judges for American Idol is not an easy job. For many years, audience members have loved Simon Cowel’s witty remarks, Paul Abdul’s sweet personality and Jennifer Lopez’s caring spirit. However, after months of speculation, on September 16, 2012, Fox announced the new panel of judges for the twelfth season of American Idol. The judges include Mariah Carey, Keith Urban, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson.

Although these artists are talented, unique and inspirational, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey are struggling to get along. Since the show began, Minaj and Carey expressed different perspectives about certain artists and disagreed on various performances. These differences led to heated arguments and disrespectful comments towards each other. Not only did they cause tension for each other, but they also caused tension for the other two judges. Consequently, their constant arguments have sadly become the main focus of American Idol. Instead of focusing solely on the contestants and their talent, the producers and directors have been focusing on the tension between the artists.

American Idol is admired and respected for being one of the best singing competitions on television. However, if American Idol wishes to maintain its reputation, the show needs to reevaluate its goals.
