Wardrobe Essentials: Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mt Holyoke chapter.

It’s that time of the year when the weather is so unpredictable that your wardrobe seems to be shifting from winter-wear to summer-wear.  But Spring is a special time between gloomy days of leftover winter winds and the bright sunshine of summer days ahead.  So, how exactly do you stock your wardrobe with such unpredictable weather?  Try out these 5 essentials for your Spring wardrobe that will save your days.

1. Rainboots.  You can’t ask for a sunshine without compromising with a little bit of rain.  Indeed Spring is one of the rainiest season, but that’s also the reason flowers bloom.  Fun rainboots will make even your gloomiest days heavenly.  Pick the ones that resemble cowboy boots or something so unusually bright (we’re talking highlighter pinks and yellows here) that it will put the sun to shame.  The trick about gloomy Spring days is to brighten up your shoes and your attitude.

2.  Cozy sweaters.  While cozy sweaters are definitely more prominent in the Fall, they definitely have a place in our hearts for the Spring.  With the gloomy Spring days comes a time when you just need to cozy up in that over-sized knit by the window seat for a cup of tea – it’s not so warm out yet!  Even when it’s sunny with flowers blooming, a cozy sweater can replace your fleece and jacket for a comfortable look without compromising the warmth.  Just imagine those lazy sunny Spring days.

3.  Spring dresses.  Pair your cozy sweater (above) with something flowy on the bottom for the most relaxed and fashionable look of the season.  But when it gets too hot during the day, lose the sweater for a beautiful sunny dress.  There’s nothing like being under the sun with the smell of Spring in your most flowy casual dress.  Whether you’re walking around campus or out-and-about town, a Spring dress is a necessity for the happiness of your closet during this time of the year.  Pair it with a hat (straw hat, cowboy hat, etc.)

4.  Flats.  For the days you can ditch your rainboots, opt out for the comfort and airiness of flats!  The great thing about flats is that they’re so versatile with any outfit.  Really, you can wear them with skinny jeans, boyfriend jeans, shorts, skirts, dresses, etc. – you name it.  They also function well with easy slip-on and slip-off if you want to dip your feet in the lake or feel the grass in between your toes on the Green.  Other options resembling flats include boat shoes like Sperry Top-Siders or light loafers.

5.  Shades.  Spring is a time to welcome sun (despite gloomy and rainy days of New England).  A pair of nice sunglasses are a necessity to the survival of days under the sun.  Not only are they great to protect your eyes, sunglasses have become a fashion icon.  But be careful in choosing a pair, given the various sizes of shades you can find in stores.  While over-sized has been in style, bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better.  You must try them on to see what fits your face shape and the feautures you want to accentuate.  But if you’re looking for a classic, go with any Ralph Lauren pair, Tom Ford aviators, or Ray-Bans.
