The Secret to Living a Happy & Positive Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Montclair chapter.

As famous pop artist Jason Mraz always preaches, “Live in the moment”. As a collegiate balancing school, work, and our ever growing and necessary social lives and families, it can be hard to keep a positive outlook on life. As our semester dwindles down and starts to get difficult, it’s important to keep our heads up and our outlook on life positive.

The first and foremost important tip is to keep a positive attitude and don’t focus on the negative. Despite it being cliché and over stated, every bad experience happens for a reason. Perhaps you’re break up happened to allow someone better, or you didn’t do as well on an exam to push you to ace your final. All things happen for a reason. Embrace it, and learn from it.

In the face of a bad day, a sour attitude, or an all-out melancholy mood, here are some pick-me ups to remind you that life can always be a happy and warm place.

Hallmark and feel good movies:

With the holidays just around the corner, Hallmark and all of the other networks geared toward women and feel good holiday cheer, are playing happy movies all day long. Turn it on for an instant boost and reminder of sappy holiday romance and the cheer that lies just around the corner.

Keep your favorite movies in an accessible place for easy access whenever you need a boost. Even if these movies make you cry, sometimes the best medicine for a bad day is to just let it all out. Set aside a few hours and let yourself get lost in the tragic love of the Titanic or other equally beautifully tragic movies.

Dress up:

When you’re feeling your worst, the best fix is to look your best. Despite wanting to mope around in yoga pants, force yourself to do your hair and makeup and put something pretty on. The added emphasis on pulling yourself out of the dumps will boost your mood and your confidence when all is said and done, and remind you that you’re a beautiful woman that can conquer anything.

Grab your girlfriends or your boyfriend:

If you’re having a bad day and you’re overwhelmed by everything, call your girlfriends for a girls’ outing or your boyfriend to persuade him into snuggling and watching romantic comedies for the day. Despite all of the work and the pressure you have building up, it’s important to take time and breathe for you. All work and no rest will make you dull and tired, and suck all of the happiness of life and the season out of you. With Christmas and Thanksgiving around the corner, there’s plenty around to make you feel the warmth and joy you need to keep you motivated.

As young collegiates, we’re far too pretty and far too motivated to let the little bumps and bruises bring us down. It’s important to always remember that there will be things we can’t control, we can’t fix, and that will ultimately dim our shine. But keeping that in mind, we have the power to overcome and work through it, and be better and stronger for it. Know that you’re never alone in the struggles you may encounter throughout the semester and that the best medicine is through laughter and good friends. And some Jason Mraz.
