The Shameless Surge

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Molloy chapter.

As the iconic show from Shotime, Shameless has been around since 2011. However, this is only the American version that is. Shameless is a show that actually originated in the United Kingdom in 2004. However, like usual, America decided to make an American version of the show. Most of the main characters are based off of the U.K. characters with slight name changes. However, the characters and plot points definitely differ. Personally, I’ve never watch the U.K. version, but I have been a fan of Shameless for quite some time now. It’s a little funny that people are just now learning about it! What I mean is, almost everyone I know has now started watching it. It’s just crazy to me because I feel like the show has been around since forever! Honesty hour: I didn’t know about the show until about sometime during the run of Season 4. Of course however, I was already caught up to the show in no time as I binge watched 3 seasons with no problem.

Honestly, I understand why everyone is being drawn to the show. The storyline and the writing is simply astounding and the characters are realistic and three dimensional. The acting in it is phenomenal and I think one of the best portrayals of a character ever is Emmy Rossuma as Fiona Gallagher. As the protagonist in the American version of Shameless, a lot of the show is focused on her and from her perspective. However, the perspective often changes thoughout different characters of the family. Over the course of six seasons (that’s the season I’m up to right now) the characters all grow and develop in completley unique ways. Honestly, I never expected half the things that happened to happen. Probably one of the biggest changes in character development would be the character of Debbie Gallagher. Her character is one that I’d say has definitely changed the most over the course of the show as her personality grows. The show deals with a whole wide range of issues that people deal with, however, Shameless definitely focuses on the diffculties that a lower class income family faces in Amerca. They struggle to make ends meet and everyone (for the most part) tries to contribute to help keep the family afloat. Fiona does what she can for her family all the time and that is what makes her such a phenomenal character. Despite how her family had basically betrayed her when she was younger, she does what she can to ensure the future of her younger siblings, despite the fact that was not done for her. In case your wondering who my otp is, Ian and Mickey forever, sorry not sorry. They belong together in my opinion and they are the most interesting couple on the show. Mickey’s character is definitely one that changes dramatically as well as he continues to grow and learn to love. It’s truly heartbreaking what happens, but you’ll have to see the show to see what happens! Shameless has always had a place in my heart since the moment I saw it. So again, I understand why the show is blowing up, I just don’t understand why it’s blowing up now when it’s been out there for years! PEOPLE SHOULD’VE BEEN ON THIS SOONER! ALSO I CAN’T BELIEVE I STARTED WATCHING A SHOW BEFORE IT WAS SUPER POPULAR. I’VE NEVER BEEN AHEAD OF THE TREND! And if you’re not watching it now. GET ON WITH IT!!
