Buyer Beware: Kylie Cosmetics

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at MNSU chapter.

If you have been on the internet at any point in the last year it is likely you have seen something about Kylie Cosmetics. This girl has taken the makeup world by storm. She has released her famous lip kits, eye shadow pallets, holiday collections, valentines day collections, Kylighters and even a collaboration with her sister Khloe. Almost every time she releases a new product it sells within minutes and crashes the website. She can barely keep her products on the shelf! She recently started creating pop-up stores in a few cities. She has hundreds of her cosmetic products there and a ton of Kylie merchandise. Overall, the company seems to be doing really well.

This last Tuesday I was working out and watching my usual makeup tutorials. I started off with some Jaclyn Hill, moved on to Jeffree Star, and came across a Kylie Cosmetics review. It was a review of her brand new highlighters, so I decided to watch it. The YouTuber started talking about three of the highlighters she bought. Two of them arrived perfectly fine, but the last highlighter package was empty. The whole unit carton was there, but no product inside. The girl said that she has tried to reach Kylie Cosmetics Customer Service and has not had any luck. There are countless videos of other unhappy customers who also received empty highlighters.

I came across another video of another unhappy customer with a messed up order. This YouTuber purchased the $300-holiday bundle and only received the $180 merry bundle. She has tried to reach out to kylie cosmetics with no reply. Another complaint made in her video is that it took almost two weeks to receive all of her products in the mail. This YouTuber did say that she does like the actual products, but likely won’t be buying again after being ripped out of her money.

Back in January Kylie released a peach eyeshadow pallet. As soon as people started receiving their products, people were complaining about a bad smell. They opened up the pallet and it instantly started smelling. One YouTuber sought out an answer to this strange problem. Kylie Cosmetics responded and said the smell is because of “being enclosed during transit”. They recommended keeping the pallet open for 24-48 hours. People have said that keeping the pallet open does not rid of the smell.

Kylie has released many “Kylie Lip Kits” over the past year. Things started off well but quickly went downhill. Many people who have received lip kits have noticed they are only half full. One YouTuber had purchased several of her metal lip kits and found they are half empty. When you receive it appears to be full, but once you swirl the wand around it’s easy to see they aren’t full products. This YouTuber tried on the color “Kymajesty” and also noticed it is a very sheer color. Overall, this was another very dissatisfied customer.

Kylie Cosmetics is a fairly new company that has been very controversial from the beginning. From poorly made products, missing products, and poor customer service this company does not have a very bright future. The company has also been accused of reusing packaging and ignoring customer emails. If you are thinking of purchasing from this company, be warned that there are many dissatisfied customers! Just know that you could potentially be paying Kylie for either a bad product or an empty product. The company has still yet to address many of the problems that have been reported. Kylie somewhat addressed the problem by saying “ I’m sick and tired of people coming for my business. I don’t want to respond to the haters, but you guys deserve an answer and to know the facts. I love you and apologize to anyone who felt the urge to complain and didn’t receive the service they deserve.” I guess in Kylie Jenner’s world the words “hater” and “displeased customer” have the same meaning. I know that I, personally, will not give Kylie another penny of my money.
