Reviewing Michelle Obama’s Role As First Lady

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Mizzou chapter.

In the six years that Barack Obama has held office as the President of the United States, Michelle Obama has always stood as a strong first lady. Mrs. Obama appears in magazines, newspapers, television, etc. for reasons ranging from her political initiatives to her incredibly fit arm muscles. Political opinions aside, it is evident that Michelle Obama is an incredible First Lady.

During President Obama’s State of the Union Address on Jan. 20, 2015, he mentioned a project that Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden (Vice President Joe Biden’s wife) have worked on since 2011; the two women started a movement to help military veterans and their spouses to be successful in their lives. This program included proposed legislation to help military veterans and their spouses with employment. Legislation has been passed or considered in over 40 states thus far.

In his State of the Union Address, President Obama said, “Joining Forces, the national campaign launched by Michelle and Jill Biden, has helped nearly 700,000 veterans and military spouses get new jobs. So to every CEO in America, let me repeat: If you want somebody who’s going to get the job done, hire a veteran.”

Another major project that Michelle Obama has worked on in the past six years is her healthy eating and exercise initiative with children. Her goals with the program, “Let’s Move!”, include reducing childhood obesity and health risks associated with it, such as diabetes, cancer and asthma to name a few. Much of her campaign for keeping children healthy in America targets schools by encouraging them to provide healthy foods for school lunches and promote active lifestyles. This has been improved through changes in school lunch menus and education on what characteristics reflect healthy lifestyles.

Besides her many accomplishments as the first lady, Michelle Obama always looks stylish with beautiful outfits that showcase her sculpted arm muscles. She is known to wear garments designed by world famous designers, as well as less expensive designers that are more accessible to the average businesswoman. Her sense of style reiterates her class and power as a woman. Although Mrs. Obama’s time as first lady will come to an end in just a few years, it will be exciting to see what more she can accomplish in the next two.
