5 Ways to Survive the Bitter Cold

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

I think we can all agree that this cold weather has got to go. Personally, I prefer winter to summer—I really hate sweating—but this has just reached a new level of ridiculous. Walking to classes in below freezing temperatures and wind punching you in the face the whole time is seriously not a great feeling. Now that the stupid groundhog has decided that we deserve 6 more weeks of this, it’s time to hit survival mode.

  1. Dry your hat

Before you put on that really cute beanie that really doesn’t do much to keep you head warm anyway, throw it in the drier. I’m telling you, it’s life changing. It makes stepping out your door in the morning just the tiniest bit easier. Granted, the warmth doesn’t last too long, especially if it’s really windy. But every second of warmth counts, right?

   2. Double socks                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                As Millersville has recently experienced, there is nothing worse than slush when you’re walking to class. Sometimes, no matter what shoes you wear, you still manage to get wet and cold feet. There’s really two solutions to this: wear two pairs of socks and take the top pair off when they get wet, OR, pack an extra pair of socks in your book bag. You’ll seriously thank me later.

3. Take your jacket off in class

It can be really tempting to keep your jacket on when you’re in class because of how cold you get. However, this is really not helping you at all. By keeping your coat on, your body is adjusting its internal temperature. Therefore, when you step aside again, you’re basically walking out without a jacket on. Bite the bullet and reserve your jacket for outside use only.

4. Choose iced coffee

If you’re anything like me, you drink iced coffee all year round. But this time of year, a lot of people choose the hot coffee route. You’ve probably heard this before, but in order to raise or lower the temperature of your body, it’s better to have drinks that are at the same temperature. For instance, if you’re cold, drinking something cold will help your body warm up more efficiently. Iced coffee for the win!

5.Stay in bed

You didn’t need me to tell you this. You’re probably reading this in bed. It’s really the only practical solution to survive this weather.

Stay warm collegiates!
