5 Things to Remember When Visiting London

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Millersville chapter.

Ever considered taking a vacation or studying abroad in London? It’s a lot of fun but there are so crucial things to keep in mind to make the best of your trip while you’re there.

1. There are no trash cans

It is a rare sight to see a waste receptacle about since they make a perfect hiding place for bombs. Due to the dangers of them, they have been removed from the streets. They also have street cleaners out to collect all the garbage.

2. Cross the road at your own risk

People in London cross whenever convenient, whether the light indicates safe passage or not. Sometimes it is necessary or you’ll never get across due to the mass of people that cross at the same time. Just keep in mind that double decker buses don’t stop.

3. Buy an Oyster Card

This is an absolute must in order to easily use the London Transport systems like the Tube or Overground without hassle. You pay five pounds to get one and then fill it up with money to use. So even if you are staying the weekend, you can return your card at the end and they will give you the five pounds back, including what is left on the card.

4. Museums are free!

In the U.K., all museums are free. If you are visiting and you want to save money, consider going to see some of the many museums! Original manuscripts of famous literary authors, the Rosetta Stone and famous artistic portraits are some of what you can find.

5. Everything is closed on Sundays

The emergency stores are open of course, but most restaurants and fun attractions are closed on Sundays. But fear not, that would be a perfect time to visit Regent’s Park or Camden Market (because they are never closed and have some of the best shopping!)

So grab a camera and your passport and have fun in London (but don’t forget your term papers if you’re study abroad!) Keep Calm and drink tea!
