You know the days. The days when you wake up and your hair just straight up refuses to do what you want it to. When no matter how much dry shampoo you use or half-assed curling you try it still looks like a rat’s nest.

In these situations I usually throw on a baseball cap or put my hair in a messy bun, but that’s boring and *ahem* basic. And who wants to be basic? Not I!

Here are some not-so-mainstream ways to spruce up your hair when it’s looking horrible.

Scrunchies

Carrie Bradshaw is definitely rolling over in her theoretical TV grave right now. I’m sure you all SATC fans remember her infamous argument with Berger over the scrunchie. “No New York woman would be caught dead in a scrunchie!”

Well folks, here we are. These oversized hair ties are all over the place right now and I’m living for it. I’ve mentioned before how I’m into dressing like a little girl and these really do the trick. They give off youthful and playful vibes and great in or out of your hair! I’ve been seeing girls wear them on their wrists recently as well.

Bobby Pins

Who knew that these everyday hair pins could be used as a statement accessory? You can simultaneously pull your hair out of your face while also serving looks.

I’m a big fan of using bobby pins that don’t match your hair color so they really stand out. Also try experimenting with different shapes and patterns to come up with a unique style for yourself. I’ve been digging star shapes and X’s!

Berets

Truly the ultimate cool girl hat, a beret can instantly make any outfit look chic. A generic graphic tee can be turned into an upscale outfit.

The traditional black beret is timeless and can be a great addition to most looks. It makes everything you wear it with seem more sophisticated and trendy.

If you’re going for more of a bold statement try a colored beret. In this picture the pops of red add a fun and quirky feel to the otherwise boring outfit.

Hair Scarves

You can literally wear hair scarves a zillion ways. Go on Pinterest and look them up and you’ll find countless posts of “20 ways to wear a scarf”. Some of my personal favorite varieties are as a headband – which is another popular trend – or as a way to spice up a simple ponytail.

You can add some flair and color to your hair (lol I’m a poet and I know it!) with scarves. And you can be extra different by going to thrift stores to find a one of a kind scarf just for you.

Hair Charms

These aren’t exactly an everyday accessory in my book, but hey if you have the time and energy, go ahead and throw some beads in your hair. Hair charms are especially great for music festivals because they add a boho feel to your look, which is usually the vibe at most popular festivals.

If you don’t have the patience to strategically place them in your hair while it’s down (not sure if I would) put them in your braids. This is a much more easy way to utilize this trend and it adds a lot to a quick and easy hair look.

Newsboy Hats

If your hair is looking especially greasy the only thing to do is throw on a hat. Thankfully, newsboy caps are popular right now, so you can still look cute and dressy while wearing a hat!

Unsure how long this style of hats will be in fashion, but for now they are a really fun way to hide those dirty roots.
