Illuminart: Combining Light and Technology to Brighten Up Your Winter Night

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at McGill chapter.

From February 22nd to March 11th, Montreal will be showcasing 25 dazzling outdoor light displays as a part of Illuminart, an event that brings together creativity, inspiration, and innovation. Fusing together art, lighting, and technology, Illuminart is meant to solidify Montreal’s reputation as a “Smart and Digital City.” This impressive circuit of light and art will cover a 3.6 km stretch in Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles.

Admission is free, and the displays will be available from Wednesday to Saturday in the evenings from 5:30 pm to 11:00 pm. Although it is suggested that visitors begin the circuit on the corner of De Bleury and Saint-Catherine, they can also wander through the collection of illuminated works as they please.

The projects themselves incorporate a wide range of innovative and interactive technologies including lasers, sound effects, giant projections, and video-mapping effects. Among the 25 featured projects, visitors can look forward to a radiant bamboo forest, a video sculpture that projects visitors’ faces onto the sculpture itself, gigantic illuminated humanoid figures, and a cement truck that has been transformed into a large disco ball.

The inaugural edition of Illuminart is presented in conjunction with the 18th edition of Montreal en Lumière, one of the largest winter festivals in the world. The festival this year consists of a cultural program featuring over 600 artists from 13 different countries, a gastronomic program filled with workshops, tastings, and conferences, a free outdoor site where visitors can experience and enjoy Illuminart, a giant Ferris wheel, a Zipline, and Nuit Blanche, an exciting night with a lineup of over 200 activities (most of which are free).

What’s more, this phenomenal agenda of events is also a part of Montreal’s 375th anniversary celebrations. So, grab some friends and add some excitement to a wintery night by exploring Illuminart and Montreal en Lumière!
